The historic no-draft middle-distance race on Lake Mergozzo, set between crystal-clear waters and the Ossola valleys.
The Mergozzo International Triathlon is one of Italy's most historic and beloved triathlon events. It takes place in Mergozzo, a small village in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province of Piedmont, overlooking the lake of the same name. This non-navigable body of water is considered one of the cleanest in Europe, offering an authentic open-water experience for the swimming leg. Organized by Dimensione Sport, the event is now a classic fixture on the national endurance calendar.
The event follows the middle-distance (113 km no-draft) format, a demanding challenge that tests endurance and energy management:
The no-draft rule prohibits drafting on the bike, making the race even more selective and rewarding the individual performance of every athlete.
The cycling leg is the event's signature feature: the route traverses the surrounding territory, passing through the municipalities of Mergozzo, Premosello, Vogogna, and Beura Cardezza, over two 45 km laps. The roads of the Val d'Ossola, framed by mountains, offer a backdrop of rare beauty that has always been the event's hallmark. The running leg takes place right by the lake, in an intimate and scenic setting.
Now in its most recent editions, the Mergozzo International Triathlon continues to grow, attracting over 400 participants, including both Italian and international athletes. In addition to the individual race, a relay format is available, allowing teams of three athletes to tackle the swim, bike, and run together. The event features a 2,000 euro prize pool, split equally between the men's and women's rankings, with awards also for category winners.
Between the purity of the water, the spectacular Ossola cycling route, and the professional organization of Dimensione Sport, Mergozzo is an unmissable stop for middle-distance triathlon enthusiasts. It is an event that blends sport, nature, and territory in the heart of northern Piedmont.
The 31st edition of the Mergozzo International Triathlon will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, confirming its status as one of the most appreciated events on the Italian endurance circuit. The race features the classic middle-distance (113 km no-draft): 1,900 meters swimming in the lake, 90 km by bike over two 45 km laps through Mergozzo, Premosello, Vogogna, and Beura Cardezza, and 21 km of running.
A relay formula is also available, along with a 2,000 euro prize pool split between men and women. The race course setup is scheduled for the days prior, with the support of the Red Cross, divers, civil protection, and safety boats on the water.
The detailed schedule (meeting times, start times, and award ceremonies) will be published by the organization on the official website in the weeks leading up to the race.
Team relay formula also available.
By car from Milan or Genoa: take the A26 motorway towards Gravellona Toce, exit at Verbania, and immediately after the bridge, turn left; you will reach Mergozzo after about 4 km. The reference railway station is Verbania-Pallanza.
Registration is handled via the official organization's website and the Next Race timing service ([email protected]). A team relay option is also available.
The Lake Mergozzo and nearby Lake Maggiore area offers numerous partner accommodations. We recommend booking your stay well in advance for the race weekend and checking the updated regulations and start times on the official website.
