About Lago Maggiore Marathon

The Lago Maggiore Marathon is the premier running festival of the Verbano region: an international marathon that brings thousands of runners to the shores of Lake Maggiore every November, racing from Arona to Verbania Pallanza. With its waterfront course winding through Stresa, Baveno, and the Borromean Gulf, it is widely considered one of the most picturesque races in Italy. In addition to the 42 km marathon, the event features a half marathon, a 33 km race, and a 10 km run, catering to both elite athletes and enthusiasts of all levels.

A marathon overlooking Lake Maggiore

The Lago Maggiore Marathon is the most anticipated running event in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area and one of the most evocative marathons in Piedmont. Organized by ASD Sport PRO-MOTION, the event attracts thousands of participants every year who run along the western shores of Lake Maggiore, starting in Arona and finishing in Verbania Pallanza, in the heart of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province.

The course

The 42 km marathon route follows the lakeside road, passing through some of the region's most famous villages: Meina, Lesa, Belgirate, Stresa, and Baveno, with constant views of the Borromean Gulf and its islands. It is a flat, fast, and above all spectacular route, which has earned the race its reputation as "one of the most scenic courses in Italy."

The distances

The event is designed for every type of runner and offers multiple simultaneous races:

  • Marathon (42.195 km): from Arona to Verbania Pallanza;
  • 33 km: from Arona to Verbania Pallanza;
  • Half Marathon (21 km): from Arona to Stresa;
  • 10 km: from Verbania Fondotoce to Verbania Pallanza.

An international event

In recent years, the Lago Maggiore Marathon has grown into an international attraction, drawing thousands of athletes from dozens of different countries. The race also awards FIDAL titles and rankings, attracting both elite runners and amateurs looking for a challenge in a unique natural setting.

Verbania and the Verbano region

The finish line is set in Verbania, the capital of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, which overlooks the lake and is famous for its gardens and mild climate. Running the marathon in autumn is also a perfect way to discover the Piedmont lake district in its warmest colors, amidst parks, historic villas, and the timeless charm of Lake Maggiore.
