The scientific dissemination festival in the city on the cliff
OrvietoScienza is the scientific dissemination festival that enlivens Orvieto, in the Province of Terni, thanks to the organization of IIS Majorana-Maitani. The event focuses on a major current topic and addresses it using the language of dissemination, making complex scientific issues accessible to everyone.
The festival brings together scientists, disseminators, journalists, and university professors in a series of conferences and meetings aimed at students of IIS Majorana-Maitani, teachers, and the public. Students are not mere spectators: in the preceding months, they participate in laboratory activities that prepare them for interaction with the guests, in a process that makes the school the driving force of the event.
The festival venues are the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Teatro del Carmine, in the historic center of the city on the cliff. OrvietoScienza represents a virtuous example of how a local school can become a promoter of scientific culture for the entire Umbrian community.
The 2026 edition of OrvietoScienza was held from February 19th to 21st, with the theme "Energy 2050: what scenarios for the transition?". The event, organized by IIS Majorana-Maitani, addressed the major issues of the energy system: the fragility linked to non-renewable sources, the inequity in the distribution of economic benefits, and the climate impact of fossil fuels.
Among the themes at the center of the debates: the intermittency of renewable sources (smart grids and storage systems), the reconciliation between energy transition and environmental impact, new cultural narratives, and climate justice. The meetings involved students, teachers, and citizens between the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Teatro del Carmine.
