The Orta Nova Carnival featuring floats, masks, and parades in the heart of the Cinque Reali Siti
The Orta Nova Carnival is the traditional masquerade festival of Orta Nova, a town in the Tavoliere delle Puglie in the province of Foggia (Capitanata) and one of the famous Cinque Reali Siti. For two days, usually between February and March, the town center transforms into a large open-air stage where allegorical floats, costumed groups, and performers of all ages parade amidst music, confetti, and streamers.
The event typically takes place over two dates: a first day linked to Fat Thursday and a second, more crowded one on Carnival Sunday. The highlight of the festival is the float parade, which winds through the main streets of the town: the floats, crafted with passion by associations, committees, and neighborhood groups, showcase satire, fairy-tale characters, and current events, accompanied by choreography and costumed groups.
In documented editions, the procession has started from the area of the Maria Santissima dell'Altomare Parish, with the route then winding towards the town center: during the afternoon, traffic diversions are set up to allow the parade to take place safely.
The Orta Nova Carnival is much more than just a parade: it is a precious opportunity for socializing, meeting, and sharing, capable of involving adults and children alike. It is organized by the Pro Loco of Orta Nova, which has been managing the town's entertainment and promoting its popular traditions for years. Confetti, colorful masks, music, and joy transform the squares into a meeting place where families gather and the community recognizes itself.
Carnival is one of the most deep-rooted festivals in Apulian popular culture and the Tavoliere: every town interprets it in its own way, with masks, floats, and collective rituals. In Orta Nova, the festival maintains an authentically communal character, far from major tourist flows but very much alive in the hearts of its citizens. Participating in the Orta Nova Carnival means discovering the most genuine soul of a village in the province of Foggia, where the festival is still a local affair, built together and experienced in the streets.
The 2026 Orta Nova Carnival brought Orta Nova to life over two days, Thursday, February 12 and Sunday, February 15, with traditional parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups that traveled through the town streets amidst laughter, music, masks, and plenty of joy.
The festival, organized by the Pro Loco of Orta Nova, confirmed its popular and communal character, involving families and children in an atmosphere of socialization and sharing. Confetti, colors, and creativity transformed the town center into a large festive space open to everyone.
