About Opera Studio Fauglia

Opera Studio Fauglia is an advanced operatic training program that transforms the small village of Fauglia, in the province of Pisa, into an international laboratory dedicated to opera. Young singers under 35, selected from across the globe, participate in vocal and interpretation masterclasses, culminating in a full-scale professional production—complete with orchestra, sets, and costumes—staged at the Teatro Comunale. The inaugural edition, held in April 2026, featured Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore.

An international opera workshop in Fauglia

Opera Studio Fauglia is an advanced training and production project designed to offer young singers the rare opportunity to perform an operatic role in a truly professional setting. Promoted by the Municipality of Fauglia and the Teatro dell'Aglio APS, under the artistic direction of Maurizio Canovaro, the project turns this small Tuscan village in the province of Pisa into a vibrant international laboratory for opera for several weeks.

How the program works

The program is divided into three distinct and complementary phases, designed to guide participants from the selection process to their stage debut:

  • Selection: A competition open to opera singers of all nationalities aged 35 and under, with a preliminary video-based selection.
  • Masterclasses: An intensive period of vocal and interpretative coaching with high-level instructors.
  • Production: The final staging of a major repertoire title, featuring a full orchestra, sets, and costumes, integrated into the official season of the Teatro Comunale di Fauglia.

To enhance the experience, professional audiovisual materials are created throughout the process, providing young artists with valuable tools to promote their careers.

L'Elisir d'amore, the debut production

For its 2026 debut, Opera Studio Fauglia chose Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore, a comic melodrama in two acts that blends humor with lyricism, making it one of the most beloved and accessible works in the repertoire. Thirteen young singers selected for this first edition, hailing from Italy, China, Germany, and Turkey, shared the main roles of the opera: Adina, Nemorino, Belcore, Dulcamara, and Giannetta.

Fauglia, a village turned stage

The initiative confirms the cultural vocation of the Municipality of Fauglia, which, through its Teatro Comunale and a rich, varied season, has established itself as a landmark for opera and the development of new talent. For the audience, it is a unique chance to witness a complete operatic production in an intimate, historic theater—far from the major circuits, yet with international ambition.

Opera Studio Fauglia — edition 2026

The first edition of Opera Studio Fauglia concluded on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Teatro Comunale with the staging of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore, the final result of the training program. Thirteen young singers selected from Italy, China, Germany, and Turkey performed on stage, accompanied by the Orchestra Amedeo Modigliani.

The inaugural edition of Opera Studio Fauglia debuted during the 2025-2026 season of the Teatro Comunale di Fauglia, in the province of Pisa, through a program that combined selection, masterclasses, and production. The final performance was held before a packed house and was warmly received by the audience.
