A journey through history and flavor in the heart of Val Borbera
Oltregiogo Days is a widespread festival organized by the Associazione Oltregiogo that, over two days, highlights the Apennine hinterland straddling Piedmont and Liguria. Each year, the event involves a group of municipalities with a packed program of excursions, guided tours, cultural moments, and tastings of local products, designed to showcase a territory often off the beaten path but rich in nature, history, and tradition. Most activities are free and require booking, making the slow and conscious discovery of the valley accessible to everyone.
In Grondona, a small town in the Val Borbera, located in the Province of Alessandria and the Piedmont region, Oltregiogo Days maps out a route that weaves together artistic heritage and food culture. The village participates in the event with an itinerary that combines visits to two historic places of worship with an encounter with a local dairy excellence.
Oltregiogo Days is not limited to Grondona: the 2026 edition also embraces Stazzano, with its Natural History Museum and the Sanctuary of Montespineto; Arquata Scrivia, with its medieval walk and the parish church of San Giacomo; Vignole Borbera, featuring a guided cycling route and the Ezio Poggio winery, known for its Timorasso wine; and Borghetto di Borbera, with the Spinarosa botanical garden and the trails of memory. A mosaic of experiences that reflects the authentic identity of a border territory.
The common thread of the event is the promotion of the hinterland through sustainable, local tourism in touch with nature: walking in the woods, visiting frescoed churches and art sites, and tasting the local cheeses and wines. For Grondona, in particular, Oltregiogo Days represents the ideal opportunity to discover a small village in the Alessandria mountains and a dairy tradition that spans centuries.
The eighth edition of Oltregiogo Days, scheduled for Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, 2026, had the natural soul of Val Borbera and the Oltregiogo region as its common thread. The event, spread across five municipalities, involved Stazzano, Arquata Scrivia, Grondona, Vignole Borbera, and Borghetto di Borbera with guided tours, excursions, and tastings of local products, mostly free and requiring booking via the official Associazione Oltregiogo website.
In Grondona, the proposal combined artistic heritage and dairy excellence, with the discovery of the frescoed churches and the production of Montebore.
In Grondona, the 2026 edition offered an itinerary between history and taste, divided into two main stages:
Grondona can be reached by car from the Vignole-Arquata Scrivia motorway exit (A7 Milan-Genoa), continuing along the Val Borbera. The nearest train station is Arquata Scrivia, on the Genoa-Turin line.
Visits to the churches and the Azienda Agricola La Tula are free, while tastings of dairy products require a reservation. All experiences can be booked on the official website www.oltregiogo.org, where updated schedules and participation details are available.
Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking around the village, along with clothing suitable for the spring season. It is advisable to book popular visits, especially those including tastings, well in advance.
