A popular late-winter festival featuring allegorical floats, masquerades, and the burning of Peppe Nappa

The Niscemi Carnival is one of the most anticipated events in the festive calendar of this town in the province of Caltanissetta, located in the heart of central-southern Sicily. For a few days, between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, the town center transforms into a massive open-air stage: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the main streets, extending up to the upper area of Via Marconi, host the parade of allegorical floats, costumed groups, and thousands of people of all ages.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, built over the preceding months by groups of local volunteers, artisans, and enthusiasts. Each float tells a different story, often inspired by cartoons, films, or current events, and is accompanied by costumed groups, dance schools, and troupes that bring the streets to life with choreography, music, and confetti. The event involves the entire community: families, children, and teenagers participate in costume, while the square becomes the hub for dancing, DJ sets, and collective celebration.
As with many carnival traditions in Sicily, the festivities in Niscemi conclude with the burning of Peppe Nappa, the famous Sicilian mask originating from the Commedia dell'arte, symbolizing the lazy yet clever servant. On the final evening, the effigy is burned in the center of the crowded square while people dance around the flames. According to an ancient ritual, the burning represents sacrifice and rebirth, marking the end of Carnival and the beginning of Lent. During this event, certificates and awards are also presented to the float groups, masked participants, and dance schools that brought the festival to life.
The event is organized by the 'Noi per Niscemi' association with the patronage of the Municipality of Niscemi and the Free Municipal Consortium of Caltanissetta. More than just a show, the Carnival is an opportunity for social gathering that strengthens local bonds and showcases the creativity of local groups. For those visiting central Sicily off the beaten path, it is a chance to discover an authentic popular festival, far from the crowds of more famous carnivals but rich in tradition, color, and human warmth.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Niscemi Carnival have not been confirmed by official sources. The event typically takes place during the Carnival period, between late winter and early spring, with parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups in the town center. Information regarding the program, times, and route will be available on the official channels of the Municipality of Niscemi and the organizing association once published.
The Niscemi Carnival animates the town's historic center, with its epicenter in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and along the main streets up to the upper area of Via Marconi.
Niscemi is located in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS117 bis and the provincial roads connecting Gela and Caltagirone; the nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso. It is advisable to park in areas outside the center during parade days.
The parades in the square are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early during peak moments (the float parade and the burning of Peppe Nappa) to secure a good spot. The event is suitable for families and children.
