Evenings under the stars on Monte Ottavio for the Night of San Lorenzo and the Perseid peak
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, the small town of Montedoro is home to one of the most active and evocative astronomical observatories in Southern Italy. Every year, around mid-August, the Ugo Foscolo Astronomical Observatory becomes the stage for the "Nights at the Observatory," two evenings dedicated to the Night of San Lorenzo and the peak of the Perseids, the meteor shower that offers the most intense shooting star display of the summer.
The observatory stands on the summit of Monte Ottavio, west of the town of Montedoro, in a position that overlooks the Sicilian hinterland with a 360-degree panorama. The high altitude and distance from major sources of artificial light make this observation point one of the best in the region to fully enjoy the Perseid phenomenon. The structure, recognizable by its opening dome and travertine cladding, combines the digital planetarium and the observatory itself into a single complex.
The evenings offer an experience that ranges from Earth to Space: observation through the large telescope, immersion in the dome planetarium, and, above all, waiting outdoors for the "shooting stars." No music, no lights: just the authentic spectacle of the sky. Visitors can relax on seating under the stars until late at night, accompanied by experts who explain the constellations, planets, and the scientific significance of the Perseids.
The event is organized by the Stargeo association, which has been committed for years to scientific outreach and the promotion of the territory's cultural heritage. In Montedoro, a town marked by the history of sulfur mines, Stargeo manages a widespread system of cultural sites that links mining memory with a gaze toward the sky: a narrative that, "from sulfur to the stars," restores identity to a village in the Nisseno area.
The "Nights at the Observatory" are aimed at families, the curious, and astronomy enthusiasts. Places are limited and access is by mandatory reservation to ensure the best observation conditions. It is a simple and poetic opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of inland Sicily and to experience, far from the noisy summer parties, the silent magic of a Night of San Lorenzo.
The 2026 edition of the "Nights at the Observatory" in Montedoro does not yet have official dates. As per tradition, the evenings take place in August, coinciding with the Night of San Lorenzo and the peak of the Perseids, featuring telescope observations, a digital planetarium, and waiting for shooting stars under the Monte Ottavio sky. Places are limited with mandatory reservation via Stargeo.
The Ugo Foscolo Astronomical Observatory is located on Monte Ottavio, west of Montedoro (CL), in the Sicilian hinterland. By car, it can be reached from Caltanissetta or Agrigento by following the internal roads toward Montedoro; the final stretch climbs to the top of the mountain. We recommend clothing suitable for cool evenings at high altitude.
The astronomical evenings have limited capacity with mandatory reservation through the Stargeo association. The facility's standard rates indicate entry to the observatory at 6 euros, the planetarium at 5 euros, and a combined ticket at 8 euros; for special events, please verify methods and costs with the organizers.
