An evening discovering the Municipal Historical Archive in the heart of the Cassero Senese of Paganico
The Night of the Archives arrives in Civitella Paganico, a municipality in the province of Grosseto nestled in the Tuscan Maremma, to offer citizens and visitors a rare opportunity: to cross the threshold of the municipal Historical Archive and touch the documents that hold the roots of the community. The event takes place in the halls of the Cassero Senese of Paganico, in Piazza dell'Erba, one of the village's most characteristic architectural landmarks.
The Historical Archive of Civitella Paganico preserves a precious collection, consisting largely of the records of the Community of Civitella: resolutions, correspondence, contracts, electoral registers, and materials related to public works, health, education, accounting, tax rolls, and conscription offices. It also houses documents from the Podesteria of Pari and the archives of Enaoli, the national organization for orphans that had a historic headquarters in Civitella Paganico.
During the evening, the exhibition focuses on the oldest documents, with a journey that starts from the 16th-century papers of the Community of Civitella and reaches municipal documentation from 1865 onwards. It is an opportunity to understand how, through administrative writings, it is possible to reconstruct the daily life, choices, and transformations of a territory.
The initiative is part of the Archivissima program, the Italian festival entirely dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of archives, and its main event, the Night of the Archives, which involves hundreds of cultural institutions throughout Italy every year. By joining this national network, Civitella Paganico places its documentary heritage in a broader dialogue, highlighting how archives are not places frozen in the past but living tools of knowledge, capable of preserving the traces of a community.
Participation is open and free. The evening is designed for families, local history enthusiasts, students, and curious individuals who wish to approach a part of the history of the Municipality and the Grosseto Maremma that is often invisible but fundamental. Promoted by the Municipality of Civitella Paganico, the initiative is part of the activities to enhance the municipal library and archive.
The 2026 edition of the Night of the Archives in Civitella Paganico took place on Friday, June 5, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM, in the halls of the Cassero Senese of Paganico in Piazza dell'Erba.
