The grand free New Year's Eve concert in the baroque heart of Ortigia
The New Year's Eve Concert in Piazza Duomo is the event where, every December 31st, the city of Syracuse bids farewell to the passing year and welcomes the new one. The setting is the extraordinary Piazza Duomo in Ortigia, the island that forms the city's historic core and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site: a baroque backdrop of rare beauty, framed by the Cathedral's facade, which transforms for one night into a grand open-air stage.
Promoted by the Municipality of Syracuse through the Culture and Tourism Department, the event is part of the tradition of major free New Year's Eve concerts designed to involve residents and visitors in a moment of collective celebration. Admission is completely free, and every year the square fills with thousands of people of all ages, in a festive atmosphere that defies even the winter weather.
The program alternates between major names in Italian music, local bands, and DJ sets that keep the audience going well past the countdown. The highlight remains the collective midnight toast, when the entire square raises their glasses to celebrate the new year. After the countdown, the party continues with music and entertainment, extending the night in the historic center of Ortigia.
Choosing Piazza Duomo means combining entertainment, historical heritage, and popular participation. The island of Ortigia, with its alleys, seafront, and baroque palaces, serves as a natural extension of the party: before and after the concert, a stroll through the illuminated streets of the center is an integral part of the Syracuse New Year's experience.
An event that confirms Syracuse's role each year as one of the Sicilian capitals of New Year's Eve celebrations, marked by music, tradition, and the beauty of its historic center.
For New Year's Eve 2026, the Municipality of Syracuse brought the voice of Irene Grandi to Piazza Duomo in Ortigia, an artist who has traversed Italian pop with a direct and energetic style. The free concert began at 10:00 PM on December 31, 2025, and continued into the early hours of the new year.
The singer revisited tracks from her career, from the nineties to her most recent successes, also presenting her new album of unreleased songs ORO e ROSA, released in November. The evening was also accompanied by the group Bellamorèa and DJ sets by Giulio Licata and Mazzia Piazzese, with Michael Arsi as host.
Despite the rain, the square was filled with a large audience of all ages, amidst lights and open umbrellas, for the collective midnight toast. The party then continued with music and entertainment in the historic center, confirming the vitality of the New Year's Eve celebrations in Syracuse.
By car: take the A18/RA15 motorway to Syracuse, then follow signs for the historic center. On New Year's Eve, traffic in Ortigia is restricted: it is best to park in the areas near the Umbertino Bridge and continue on foot. By train: Syracuse station, about a 20-25 minute walk from Piazza Duomo. By plane: Catania Fontanarossa Airport, about an hour away.
Admission to the concert in Piazza Duomo is free. As this is an outdoor winter evening event, warm clothing is recommended, and an umbrella or raincoat in case of rain. The square fills up quickly: it is better to arrive early to secure a spot.
