Six days of trekking, climbing, and adventure in the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains in Longi
The Nebrodi Outdoor Fest was born in Longi, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Messina nestled in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, with a clear vision: to make nature and outdoor activities a true strategy for slow, experiential tourism. For nearly a week, the village transforms into a base camp for hikers, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts who arrive here to walk along trails, rock faces, waterfalls, and forests that reveal the most authentic side of inland Sicily.
The festival is a journey through the most evocative landscapes of the Nebrodi. The Rocche del Crasto, one of the park's iconic landmarks, offer sweeping views, open spaces, and grazing livestock. The Catafurco Waterfall, reachable through the spectacular Stretta di Longi, provides a setting rich in water, greenery, and tranquility. The event concludes in the Mangalaviti Forest, one of the most fascinating environments in the Nebrodi Park, with its beech trees and trails immersed in lush vegetation.
Alongside trekking, the program features canyoning, e-biking, and climbing, with an artificial wall set up in the village square that is also dedicated to schools. A central moment is the dedication of the Nebrodi Adventure Park to the memory of Antonio Araca, a key figure in the creation of the local adventure park. There is also a strong social dimension, with roaming tastings through the alleys of the historic center, the community maccarrunata in the square, and dinners in traditional restaurants, where every course becomes an opportunity to discover the monuments and hidden corners of the village.
The Nebrodi Outdoor Fest is not just a sports event: it is a territorial development project supported by the Sicilian Region, the Nebrodi Park, and the Municipality of Longi, in collaboration with the La Stretta Naturalistic Association. The roundtable discussion "Small villages between naturalistic enjoyment and authentic flavors," hosted in the church of the Santissimo Salvatore, reflects on how outdoor activities can become a driver of development for Sicily's inland municipalities.
The first edition of the Nebrodi Outdoor Fest transformed Longi into the Sicilian capital of adventure, with a program spread over six days between nature, sports, and tradition. Promoted by the Sicilian Region, the Nebrodi Park, and the Municipality of Longi together with the La Stretta Naturalistic Association, the festival attracted hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to trails, rock faces, waterfalls, and forests.
Longi is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the Sant'Agata di Militello or Brolo exits), then continue along the provincial roads that climb towards the interior of the Nebrodi Park.
The event takes place in a mountain environment: trekking shoes, layered clothing, and water are recommended. Guided excursions and canyoning or climbing activities generally require booking with the organizers and the accompaniment of local guides. Many initiatives in the square, such as the climbing wall and tastings, are free to access.
