The Tyrrhenian half marathon between the sea and the Nebrodi mountains
The Nebrodi Half Marathon is one of the most anticipated running events of the Sicilian winter. It takes place every February in Sant'Agata di Militello, a coastal town in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and nestled at the foot of the Nebrodi Park in Sicily. The event is organized by ASD Atletica Nebrodi, under the patronage of the Municipality of Sant'Agata di Militello, and is held in memory of Maurizio Gorgone, a financial police officer who died in the line of duty.
The race day features three events starting together from Piazza Francesco Crispi:
The course winds through a city circuit entirely closed to traffic, starting from Piazza Crispi and finishing near Castello Gallego. The route runs along the Sant'Agata di Militello seafront, offering participants stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, on clear days, the Aeolian Islands on the horizon. The technical challenge and the charm of the landscape make the Nebrodi Half Marathon a favorite among runners from all over Sicily.
Established in 2014, the event has grown with each edition, attracting hundreds of athletes from clubs across the island. Included in the FIDAL calendar and the regional half marathon Grand Prix circuit, the race combines a competitive spirit with a community atmosphere, involving families, supporters, and enthusiasts who bring the town center to life. After the race, awards ceremonies wrap up a day of sport in the heart of the Nebrodi region.
The 2026 edition, the twelfth, was held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, in Sant'Agata di Militello, organized by ASD Atletica Nebrodi and held in memory of Maurizio Gorgone. The race opened the regional half marathon Grand Prix season, attracting over 500 participants across the various events.
In the men's half marathon, Riccardo Pavone (GS Indomita) won in 1h13'35", ahead of Gianfranco Messina (1h13'44") and Daniele Sammatrice (1h16'34"). Among the women, Desiree Cugnata (Athlon Kamarina) won in 1h29'11", followed by Rosa Alfieri and Rosaria Plano. The start from Piazza Crispi and the finish at Castello Gallego, with the passage along the seafront overlooking the Aeolian Islands, confirmed the charm of the course.
Half Marathon (21.097 km) — valid for the FIDAL calendar and the 24th Sicily Half Marathon Grand Prix.
Porta dei Nebrodi Trophy (14 km) — shorter circuit over two laps.
Giro di Sant'Agata (7 km) — non-competitive run and walk open to everyone.
Schedule: meeting and bib collection from 7:30 AM, start at 9:30 AM from Piazza Crispi, finish at Castello Gallego.
Sant'Agata di Militello can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Sant'Agata di Militello exit) and by train via the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian railway line (Sant'Agata di Militello station). The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, followed by Catania Fontanarossa.
Registration is done online via sports membership platforms. Fees vary depending on the event (half marathon, 14 km, 7 km non-competitive run), with discounted rates available for early registration. Meeting point and bib collection take place in the morning, with the race starting in the late morning from Piazza Crispi.
We recommend wearing running gear suitable for the winter climate of the Tyrrhenian coast, which is generally mild. Sant'Agata di Militello offers various accommodations and restaurants along the seafront; the area is also perfect for exploring the Nebrodi Park.
