Handmade gnocchi and rustic flavors at the foot of the Nazzano fortress
The Gnocchi Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Nazzano, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the heart of the Tiber Valley and the Lazio region. Every spring, on a Sunday in late March, the historic center comes alive for a festival that has now surpassed its twentieth edition, attracting visitors from across the Roman Sabina, the nearby province of Rieti, and the capital, located just over forty kilometers away.
The heart of the event is Piazza della Rocca, the scenic square that opens up at the foot of the Savelli Castle, a 13th-century fortress that dominates the town and the great bend of the river. It is here that the Nazzano Pro Loco, with the patronage of the municipality, sets up food stalls and outdoor tables: a simple, popular setup where people sit elbow-to-elbow, enjoying their meal while taking in the view of the valley.
The star dish is prepared according to the local traditional recipe: gnocchi strictly handmade by the association's volunteers, rolled and grooved one by one in the days leading up to the festival. They are served in two versions, both faithful to the peasant cuisine of Lazio:
The menu continues with traditional pastoral second courses: mutton stew, grilled sausages, country-style chicory sautéed in a pan, and French fries, all accompanied by wine from local producers. Portions are generous and the service, handled entirely by volunteers, proceeds with the relaxed pace of a village festival.
The day is not just about food. On the morning of the festival, the Two Towns Half-Marathon takes place, connecting Nazzano to Ponzano Romano: about sixteen kilometers on dirt roads, immersed in the countryside and woods bordering the Tiber. Runners and walkers set off early in the morning and return just in time for the opening of the stalls, in a combination of sport and gastronomy that has become the hallmark of this spring Sunday.
Nazzano is worth visiting at a leisurely pace, before or after lunch. The village retains its medieval layout, with narrow alleys climbing toward the 13th-century Savelli Castle, now home to the River Museum. Just outside the town lies the Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Regional Nature Reserve, the first protected area established in Lazio: a wetland oasis of great value for birdwatching, where in spring one can observe herons, grebes, and numerous migratory species, and where boat excursions on the river are organized during the warmer months.
The Nazzano Gnocchi Festival is not a spectacular event or a commercial fair: it is an authentic celebration, built by the community for the community, which gladly welcomes those arriving from outside. Those looking for Lazio's popular cuisine in its most genuine form, far from the tourist circuits of Rome, will find here a day of true flavors, simple hospitality, and a river landscape that few know.
On Sunday, March 29, 2026, Nazzano hosted the twenty-first Gnocchi Festival, organized by the local Pro Loco with the patronage of the municipality. As per tradition, the festival focused on lunchtime, with stalls opening in Piazza della Rocca at 12:30 PM and service continuing throughout the afternoon.
The day began early in the morning with the Two Towns Half-Marathon, a sixteen-kilometer dirt-road course between Nazzano and Ponzano Romano, which brought runners and walkers to the village, who were then welcomed at the festival tables.
Menu: handmade gnocchi with mutton ragù or tomato sauce; mutton stew; grilled sausages; country-style chicory; fries; local wine.
By car from Rome: A1 Rome-Florence motorway, exit Ponzano Romano-Soratte, then follow signs for Nazzano (about 45 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare). By train: FL1 line to Fara Sabina-Montelibretti or Poggio Mirteto station, then connecting bus or taxi. Parking in the village is limited: it is best to leave the car in the parking areas at the entrance to the town and walk up to Piazza della Rocca.
The event takes place only at lunchtime: food stalls open around 12:30 PM and service continues into the afternoon, usually until about 5:30 PM. Admission to the festival is free; you pay for what you consume at the cash registers, with typical village festival prices. The Pro Loco does not publish an official price list in advance: to know the menu costs, it is best to contact the organizers.
