The ecological transition festival in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
Naturalmente San Donato: EcoFestival in the Village is the event that transforms San Donato in Poggio—a charming hamlet in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, near Florence—into a living laboratory for ecological transition every spring. The village, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, provides the perfect backdrop for a day that combines environmental stewardship with the promotion of the Chianti territory, winding through Via del Giglio, Via Senese, Piazza del Pozzo Nuovo, Piazza Malaspina, and the surrounding countryside.
Promoted by the Pro Loco San Donato in Poggio APS with the support of Cesvot and the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, the eco-festival is built around four goals: raising awareness about sustainability, creating synergies between public and private sectors, strengthening social cohesion across generations, and enhancing local heritage. It is a festival designed for the entire community, where environmental volunteering becomes a concrete opportunity for growth and connection.
The eco-festival relies on a dense network of collaborations: in addition to Plastic Free and Legambiente, participants include the Chianti Multifunctional Observatory, the Chianti Bio-district, the Change For Planet association, and various local entities. This web of contributors gives the event its participatory dimension and deep roots within the Barberino Tavarnelle community.
In a single free day, Naturalmente San Donato offers the chance to experience one of Tuscany's most beautiful villages while focusing on the environment: you can walk, learn, do your part by collecting waste, and enjoy the market, workshops, and music. It has become a highly anticipated spring appointment in the Chianti region, successfully blending fun, ecological culture, and local identity.
The third edition of the eco-festival, held on Sunday, May 24, 2026, confirmed the event's success, attracting citizens and visitors from various parts of Tuscany. Initiatives included: an extraordinary countryside waste collection with Plastic Free and Legambiente (removing about 70 kg of small waste from the sports field area), historical-environmental walks led by Fabio Poggi, an agricultural and craft market, wooden and recycled material workshops for children, a public talk on ecological transition, and a musical performance by the band Didjedoo. The event was coordinated by the Pro Loco San Donato in Poggio, led by president Carlo Alberto Aquilani, with founder Eva Nisticò and the support of the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle.
Areas involved: Via del Giglio, Via Senese, Piazza del Pozzo Nuovo, Piazza Malaspina, and the surrounding countryside.
The eco-festival takes place in spring, typically in the second half of May (the 2026 edition was held on Sunday, May 24th).
