A trail of handcrafted nativity scenes among the traditional masi of Ruffrè, in Val di Non
The Nativity Scenes in the Masi of Ruffrè are one of the most characteristic Christmas events in Val di Non, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Every winter, the small and charming village of Ruffrè, in the municipality of Ruffrè-Mendola (Province of Trento), comes alive with an exhibition trail of nativity scenes set up among the masi, local districts, and village streets.
The works are handmade through the imagination, creativity, and passion of local volunteers, families, and associations: a collective effort that makes each edition unique and deeply rooted in the identity of the mountain community.
The route can be explored freely at your own pace, during the day or in the evening, when the lights of the nativity scenes illuminate the masi and create a particularly magical and intimate atmosphere. In this characteristic mountain village, just a short walk from two small lakes, you can discover all kinds of nativity scenes, including one with large wooden statues located outside the church at Maso Costa.
The Christmas calendar also features an evocative torchlight procession among the nativity scenes accompanied by bagpipers, with a meeting point in the square above the church at Maso Costa. For an even more exciting experience, you can book a horse-drawn carriage ride through the masi and frozen ponds of Ruffrè by contacting the friends at the Maneggio Coflari.
Nestled between dense fir forests and overlooking the Mendola Pass, Ruffrè-Mendola is a village of medieval origins where traditional masi still survive, serving as a testament to the Alpine culture of this part of Trentino. The nativity scene event is part of the broader Christmas Magic in Val di Non program, which offers widespread nativity scenes, markets, and events in the valley's villages every year.
From December 14, 2025, to January 11, 2026, the village of Ruffrè (Municipality of Ruffrè-Mendola, Val di Non) hosted the annual edition of the Nativity Scenes in the Masi. The free, self-guided trail allowed visitors to discover nativity scenes set up among the masi, including the large wooden statues in front of the church at Maso Costa. The Christmas program also included a torchlight procession with bagpipers and the option to book carriage rides among the masi and frozen ponds. The nativity scene map was available at the Pro Loco Ruffrè office.
