A craft market in the heart of the Oltradige

Handwerk am Dom, or Cathedral Crafts, is a small and refined Christmas market held at the Widumshof in the village of San Paolo (St. Pauls), one of the eleven hamlets that make up the municipality of Appiano sulla strada del vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße), in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. The event takes its name from the nearby parish church of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle, known as the "Oltradige Cathedral": an imposing building with an 86-meter-high bell tower, visible from afar among the vineyards and orchards of the Wine Road.

Local craftsmanship in the spotlight

The market brings together local artisans who display their unique pieces, crafted with passion and dedication. Among the stalls, you will find jewelry, ceramics, woodwork, and textiles, all showcasing local expertise. The intimate nature of the event allows visitors to meet the creators personally, discover their workshops, and learn about the techniques behind every object: an authentic experience, far from the frenzy of large markets, where the quality and story of each product matter more than quantity.

Part of the Appiano Advent

Handwerk am Dom is part of the broader Appiano Advent (EppanAppiano Advent) calendar, which brings the municipality's villages to life every weekend from late November to early January with sparkling lights, artisanal products, live music, and mulled wine. San Paolo, in particular, is famous during the Christmas season for its nativity scene exhibition displayed throughout the streets and illuminated windows of the village, creating a charming backdrop for the market.

Located at an altitude of about 400 meters in the Oltradige region, San Paolo preserves narrow, winding streets lined with ancient Oltradige-style houses, featuring arches and secluded courtyards. The surrounding landscape, dotted with castles and vineyards, provides the setting for this small craft festival, which combines South Tyrolean Christmas tradition with the promotion of local manual labor.
