Christmas on the slopes of Vesuvius, featuring the Piennolo PDO tomato and a White Night in Piazza Belvedere
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Natività Vesuviana... a land that creates beauty is the Christmas festival that lights up six towns on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius every December: San Giorgio a Cremano (the lead municipality), Portici, Massa di Somma, Pollena Trocchia, Volla, and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio. Created to showcase the historical, artistic, and spiritual heritage of the Vesuvian area, the event reached its 19th edition in December 2025—a rare example of long-term cultural collaboration between different local administrations.
Within this widespread program, San Sebastiano al Vesuvio carves out its own identity with two events that reflect the town's character: a food festival dedicated to the most famous local product and a White Night that turns the center into an open-air living room. The events are primarily concentrated in Piazza Belvedere and along the main shopping streets, just a short walk from the patron saint's sanctuary.
The event that traditionally kicks off the local calendar is the Piennolo Tomato Festival, a three-day celebration in early December held in Piazza Belvedere. The star is the Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio PDO, a small tomato grown in volcanic soil and preserved in clusters—the piennolo—using a traditional technique that keeps it fresh for months without industrial processing. It is the signature product of the entire Vesuvian area, and it is no coincidence that the Consortium for its protection is based right here in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio.
The second highlight is the White Night. On December 12, 2025, the center of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio transformed for an evening of extended shop hours and events scattered throughout the town. This formula works perfectly in the densely populated towns of the Neapolitan belt: no single stage, but a city that stays awake, with illuminated shop windows, people in the streets, and local businesses becoming part of the show.
The strength of Natività Vesuviana lies in its inter-municipal scale: while San Sebastiano al Vesuvio offers its food festival and White Night, the other towns complete the picture with concerts, exhibitions, guided tours, children's workshops, artistic nativity scenes, and theater performances until December 30th. In San Giorgio a Cremano, Villa Bruno hosts exhibitions of bells and sculptures from the Marinelli foundry in Agnone and a display of artistic nativity scenes; Massa di Somma sets up the Candyland village; Volla and Pollena Trocchia host Santa's villages; and Portici turns on the Christmas lights on December 8th, closing with a Christmas concert. The artistic direction is led by Michele M. Ippolito, and the project is supported by the Rotation Fund under the Campania Region's Cohesion Agreement.
With just over 8,000 inhabitants in an area of only two square kilometers, at an altitude of 175 meters on the western slope of Vesuvius, San Sebastiano al Vesuvio is one of the most densely populated towns in Campania. The town still bears the memory of the 1944 eruption, which destroyed much of it and necessitated an almost total reconstruction. The 16th-century church of San Sebastiano Martire survived and is now a diocesan sanctuary and the community's main landmark. Christmas here naturally intertwines with devotion to the patron saint, who is later celebrated in January with his traditional festival.
Visitors arriving in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio in December will not find a massive ticketed festival, but rather a local Christmas experience: free, widespread, and very popular with families from the area. It is an excellent opportunity for those visiting Naples who want to see how Christmas is truly celebrated in the Vesuvian province, among PDO products, open shops, and illuminated squares near the Vesuvius National Park.
No official dates have been announced yet for the 2026 edition of Natività Vesuviana in San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, near Naples. The festival, promoted together with San Giorgio a Cremano, Portici, Massa di Somma, Pollena Trocchia, and Volla, traditionally takes place throughout the month of December and is usually announced shortly before the start, typically between late November and the first few days of the month.
Based on previous editions, the local program revolves around two pillars: the festival dedicated to the Piennolo del Vesuvio PDO Tomato, hosted in Piazza Belvedere, and a White Night with extended shop hours and entertainment along the town's streets. The overall festival program also includes concerts, exhibitions, artistic nativity scenes, guided tours, and children's workshops distributed across the other participating towns.
We recommend checking the information on the official channels of the Municipality of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio before planning your visit: this page will be updated as soon as the 2026 calendar is made public.
San Sebastiano al Vesuvio is located about 8 km east of Naples, on the western slope of Vesuvius. By car, it can be reached from the motorway exits in the eastern part of Naples and from Portici-Ercolano, then following the internal roads that climb toward the volcano. By public transport, it is best to use the Circumvesuviana train stations in neighboring towns and local bus connections: check schedules and stops on the Municipality's website before traveling.
The center is very compact and densely populated: on festive evenings, parking spaces near Piazza Belvedere fill up quickly. It is best to arrive well in advance or leave your car in the outskirts and walk. In past editions, the festival has provided a car-sharing service for attendees.
Natività Vesuviana events are free to enter; you only pay for what you consume or purchase at food stalls and shops.
Bring warm clothing: at an altitude of 175 meters in December, evenings outdoors are cold and windy. The Piennolo Tomato Festival is the perfect time to buy clusters to take home—a culinary souvenir that lasts for months. If you have more time, combine your visit with a trip to the Vesuvius National Park and the events in the other five participating towns.
