The national painted egg contest in Civitella del Lago
In Civitella del Lago, a picturesque hamlet of the Municipality of Baschi (in the province of Terni) overlooking Lake Corbara, one of Italy's most original artistic events is held every spring: the National Painted Egg Contest. The principle is simple and fascinating: take a real egg and transform it, by painting or carving it, into a work of art.
Each edition revolves around a different theme, which serves as a starting point for artistic and cultural reflection. The competition is divided into three categories - Artists, Amateurs, and Students - with an additional Special Fantasy Prize. A total prize pool of โฌ3,000 rewards the most deserving works, judged by a jury.
During the exhibition weeks, the streets and squares of Civitella del Lago become meeting places and an open-air gallery, while also promoting the discovery of the local historical, landscape, and food and wine heritage. The exhibition venue is the Sala Brizi, and the village also houses the Ovo Pinto Museum, which collects works from past editions.
Organized by the Ovo Pinto Cultural Association, the contest is now a highly anticipated event, capable of uniting tradition and innovation and attracting artists, tourists, and culture enthusiasts to a little-known corner of southern Umbria.
The 2026 edition, the XXXVIII, had the theme of Artificial Intelligence, proposed as a starting point for artistic and cultural reflection. The exhibition-competition was held in the Sala Brizi in Civitella del Lago, transforming the village into a widespread gallery for almost a month.
The jury awarded prizes for the works in the Artists, Amateurs, and Students categories, along with the Special Fantasy Prize offered by Uwe Heller, with a total prize pool of โฌ3,000.
Exhibition-competition open from April 5 to May 1, 2026, at the Sala Brizi in Civitella del Lago. The award ceremony was held on May 2, 2026.
During the award ceremony, a plaque was presented for the tenth anniversary of the online magazine Umbria e Cultura, a long-time partner of the event.
