Orvieto's Hill Climb
The Cronoscalata della Castellana is a historic uphill motor racing competition held in Orvieto (province of Terni), along the scenic SR 79 Bis Orvietana. The course spans approximately 6.190 km, from San Giorgio to the Colonnetta di Prodo, winding through the hills surrounding Orvieto's rock.
A Race in the Mountain Trophy
The event is valid for the Italian Mountain Speed Trophy and attracts drivers, racing cars, and numerous enthusiasts every year. Hill climbs, where each car tackles the course individually against the clock, are one of the oldest forms of motorsport and find one of their most beloved venues in Umbria here.

Described by the organizers as a "symbol of passion and hospitality," the Cronoscalata della Castellana is organized by A.S.D. La Castellana and represents an eagerly awaited event for the Orvieto community and the world of motorsport, which transforms the roads around Orvieto into a stage for speed each year.
Cronoscalata della Castellana — edition 2026
The 53rd edition of the Cronoscalata della Castellana returns to Orvieto from 25 to 27 September 2026. The competition takes place along the SR 79 Bis Orvietana, on the approximately 6.190 km course from San Giorgio to Colonnetta di Prodo.
As per tradition, the race is valid for the Italian Mountain Speed Trophy and is organized by A.S.D. La Castellana. Special traffic arrangements are planned for the event days.

25 – 27 September 2026 — SR 79 Bis Orvietana
- Friday — technical and sporting checks, accreditation
- Saturday — official practice (timed reconnaissance runs)
- Sunday — race: timed climbs on the San Giorgio – Colonnetta di Prodo course, with final awards ceremony

How to get there
Orvieto can be reached by car via the A1 motorway, exit Orvieto, and by train on the Rome-Florence line. The race takes place along the SR 79 Bis Orvietana, in the vicinity of the city.
