About Mediterranean Exhibition

The National Mediterranean Exhibition is a national poultry, pigeon, and ornithological show organized by A.P.A.C. (Apulian Poultry and Pigeon Breeders Association) in Martina Franca, in the heart of the Itria Valley, Taranto province. Hosted at the Centro Fioristico Ortolini, the event gathers breeders from all over Italy, showcasing hundreds of rabbits, pigeons, ornamental poultry, and canaries in a journey dedicated to protecting biodiversity and rare breeds. Admission is free and is accompanied by a Slow Food market featuring traditional Apulian products.

A date with biodiversity in the heart of the Itria Valley

The National Mediterranean Exhibition is the major poultry, pigeon, and ornithological show that draws breeders and enthusiasts from across Italy to Martina Franca, in the province of Taranto, every January. The event is organized by A.P.A.C. — Apulian Poultry and Pigeon Breeders Association, led by Francesco Vispiano, a key reference point in Central and Southern Italy for the promotion and protection of ornamental bird and pigeon species, many of which are rare and little-known.

What to see

Within the spacious Centro Fioristico Ortolini (Parco Ortolini), hundreds of selected animals are on display: approximately 400 rabbits, 200 pigeons, 200 poultry, and 200 canaries, creating a stunning visual display of diverse colors, shapes, and breeds. The exhibition serves as both a competition for breeders and an educational showcase, designed to introduce the public to the world of ornamental poultry and pigeon breeding.

Protecting rare breeds and sustainability

The core theme of the event is the conservation of biodiversity: through the breeding and promotion of rare poultry and pigeon breeds, A.P.A.C. carries out vital work in genetic preservation and raises awareness about ecological and environmental sustainability. The exhibition thus becomes an opportunity to rediscover a often-forgotten zootechnical heritage and pass it on to new generations.

More than just animals: the Slow Food market

The event engages with the local area through a collaboration with Slow Food — Earth Markets of Martina Franca and Crispiano, which showcases traditional Apulian products and small local producers. It is a perfect occasion to combine a passion for animal breeding with the discovery of the food and wine excellence of the Itria Valley.

An event for families

With free admission, the National Mediterranean Exhibition is an event suitable for everyone, especially families and children, who can get up close and curious about the world of farm animals and ornamental birds. It represents one of the most original events dedicated to nature and rural traditions in the winter calendar of the Municipality of Martina Franca and the Puglia region.
