The Christmas market on the shores of the Ganzirri lakes, featuring wooden chalets, local crafts, and a floating nativity scene.
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On the northeastern tip of Sicily, where the Strait separates the island from Calabria, the village of Ganzirri preserves one of the most distinctive corners of the Messina municipality: the coastal lakes of Capo Peloro, brackish waters where mussels and clams have been farmed for centuries. It is here, on the shores of Lago Grande, that Natale sui Laghi comes to life every December. This Christmas market is organized by the Pro Loco Capo Peloro in collaboration with local associations, schools, and businesses.
The heart of the event is the market itself: along Via Lago Grande, traditional wooden chalets are set up to host artisans, exhibitors, and local producers. Among the stalls, you will find handicrafts, Christmas decorations, traditional Sicilian sweets, and street food specialties to enjoy while strolling with a view of the lake and the mountains of Calabria.
The most iconic element of Ganzirri is the floating nativity scene, set up on a raft on the lake's waters by the local mussel farming cooperatives. It represents the Nativity in a setting unique to Sicily, inextricably linking the religious celebration to the village's maritime vocation. During the holidays, boat tours on the Lago di Ganzirri are often available to admire it up close.
Beyond the market, the Natale sui Laghi program offers a series of cultural and live entertainment events that also involve the nearby districts of Granatari and Torre Faro: street performers, concerts, polyphonic choirs, creative workshops for children and teenagers, living nativity scenes, and initiatives tied to Sicilian folk traditions. Events take place in squares, parks, churches, and local venues, creating a festive atmosphere that lasts throughout the Christmas season.
More than just a fair, Natale sui Laghi is the expression of a lakeside community gathering around its own traditions. The Pro Loco Capo Peloro, long committed to promoting the Capo Peloro Nature Reserve, uses the market as an opportunity to celebrate the village's identity, the lake landscape, and the gastronomic heritage linked to mussel farming. It is an event that, year after year, draws locals and visitors alike in search of an authentic Christmas experience away from the most crowded tourist circuits.
Official dates and a detailed program for the 2026 edition of Natale sui Laghi in Ganzirri are not yet available. Based on previous editions, the market is expected to return to animate the shores of the Lago Grande during the Christmas period, featuring wooden chalets, crafts, street food, and the customary floating nativity scene. Information will be updated as soon as the Pro Loco Capo Peloro publishes the official calendar.
