Celebrating the narcissus bloom in Castelnuovo Nigra
Every year in May, the small town of Castelnuovo Nigra, located in the province of Turin in the heart of Piedmont, transforms to host the Narcissus Festival. During this time, the hills and plateaus surrounding the village—most notably the famous Pian delle Nere—change color thanks to a spectacular bloom: vast fields of white narcissi that give this event its name and spirit.
The festival has always been a communal event in the truest sense. The heart of the celebration is the parade of choral and folk groups that wind through the streets of the historic center, filling the village with traditional Alpine and Piedmontese songs. Alongside the music, there is a photography exhibition dedicated to the narcissus and the local area, a drawing competition, and an artisan market showcasing local products and crafts.
The food stalls are another major draw of the Narcissus Festival: here, you can taste traditional dishes and products from the Canavese and its valleys in a convivial atmosphere that attracts visitors from across the Turin area every year. The traditional lunch, available by reservation, is one of the most popular moments of the main day.
The narcissus bloom also makes the festival a perfect opportunity to discover the nature of the Valle Sacra and the surroundings of Castelnuovo Nigra. During the event, guided walks and hikes to Pian delle Nere are often organized, allowing visitors to admire the flowers up close—ideal for families and mountain enthusiasts. The festival is organized by the 'V. Marchese' Pro Loco of Castelnuovo Nigra, which has been preserving and renewing this local tradition for many years.
