On June 21st, music resonates through the Arbëreshë village of Santa Cristina Gela
The Music Festival in Santa Cristina Gela is the summer event that, every June 21st, brings concerts, performances, and moments of togetherness to the streets of this small Arbëreshë village in the province of Palermo. The initiative is part of the extensive national Music Festival network, an event born in France in 1982 and now celebrated throughout Europe on the day of the summer solstice, when communities open their squares to music as a form of free and open expression.
Santa Cristina Gela is one of the three Arbëreshë communities in Sicily, alongside Piana degli Albanesi and Contessa Entellina, where the Albanian language and culture brought to the island in the 15th century are still preserved. Founded in 1691, the town preserves traditions, songs, and rituals that intertwine the Sicilian and Arbëreshë souls. By joining the Music Festival, the community chooses music as an artistic and cultural form of expression capable of telling the story of its territory's identity and character.
The program unfolds throughout the afternoon and continues into the evening, with artistic performances scattered throughout the historic center and activities dedicated to children aged 0 to 6, ensuring the festival engages all age groups. Admission is free and open to all, in the spirit of the event which invites musicians, bands, and enthusiasts to perform in the town's public spaces.
Nestled in the hills south of Palermo, a short distance from Piana degli Albanesi, Santa Cristina Gela offers visitors not only music but also a heritage of popular traditions, typical gastronomy — from the famous wood-fired bread to Arbëreshë cheeses and desserts — and some of the most evocative rural landscapes in western Sicily. The Music Festival thus becomes an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the region, where Albanian and Sicilian cultures coexist in harmony.
The second edition of the Music Festival in Santa Cristina Gela was held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with a program spread across the historic center from 5:00 PM until midnight. The day featured artistic performances and activities for children (aged 0-6), in line with the participatory and free spirit of the event.
This edition was part of the national 2026 Music Festival program, titled 'The Voice of Places', which highlighted the identity of the territories and the choral dimension of music. For the small Arbëreshë municipality in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, it was a new opportunity to affirm music as a language of community and hospitality.
Santa Cristina Gela is located about 30 km from Palermo, along the SS118 road towards Piana degli Albanesi. Traveling by car is the most convenient option; the reference airport is the Falcone-Borsellino Airport in Palermo. The nearest train station is in Palermo, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Admission to the Music Festival is free. Performances take place in the historic center, from late afternoon until evening.
