Music lights up the Summer Solstice at the castle of Celano

The Music Festival at Castello Piccolomini is the event through which the Municipality of Celano, in the province of L'Aquila, participates in the Festa della Musica, the national celebration promoted by the Ministry of Culture every June 21st, the day of the Summer Solstice. The setting is exceptional: the Castello Piccolomini, an imposing medieval and Renaissance fortress that dominates the Fucino Plain from its hilltop perch, home to the National Museum of Abruzzo.
The initiative is more than just a concert; it is a fusion of sound, heritage, and territory. In past editions, the castle's halls have hosted immersive guided tours with musical accompaniment, leading the public to discover the collections and works preserved in the museum, transforming the exhibition route into a powerful emotional experience. On other occasions, the day has opened up to repertoires linked to Abruzzo's folk traditions, with songs and dances such as the pizzica and saltarello, and musical re-enactments dedicated to transhumance, the UNESCO intangible heritage that for centuries linked Abruzzo to Puglia along the ancient sheep tracks.
The Music Festival in Celano is made possible through the collaboration between the management of Castello Piccolomini, the Pro Loco Celano APS, and local musical and cultural associations, which propose a different program each year. The Solstice appointment is often accompanied by other initiatives hosted in the manor, such as celebrations for the International Day of Yoga, in a dialogue between music, wellness, and nature.
Located at the foot of Mount Tino and overlooking the ancient Fucino Lake, Celano is one of the most interesting cultural destinations in the Marsica area and the entire Abruzzo region. Its castle, among the best-preserved in Italy, is the hub of the town's cultural life and serves as the ideal backdrop for a festival that unites Italy's great musical tradition with the folk roots of this mountain land.
The Castello Piccolomini in Celano traditionally renews its participation in the Music Festival, the national event of the Ministry of Culture celebrated every June 21st on the day of the Summer Solstice. The detailed program for the 2026 edition (times, artists, type of tour or concert, and prices) has not yet been made public; it will be communicated through the official channels of the castle and the Pro Loco Celano APS closer to the event.
