The theatre and music festival in Leonardo's hometown, Vinci
Multiscena is one of the most beloved cultural highlights of the summer in Vinci, the town in the province of Florence world-renowned as the birthplace of Leonardo. The festival, promoted by the Municipality of Vinci and curated by the Giallo Mare Minimal Teatro company, brings narrative theatre, lecture-performances, music, and poetry to the stage, transforming the town's squares and public spaces into open-air venues. Hence the name: piรน scene (more scenes), more places, more languages.
The festival traditionally takes place in the upper village of Vinci, centered around Piazza Guido Masi, where performances come to life as dusk falls. In some editions, the format becomes itinerant, embracing the surrounding hamlets from the terrace of the Vitolini church to the Spicchio park, offering audiences diverse glimpses of the hills between the Empolese and Montalbano areas, in the heart of Tuscany.
Many editions of Multiscena choose the figure of Leonardo da Vinci as their central theme: his genius, art, science, and studies on flight. This is no coincidence: the festival is part of the rich calendar of initiatives that Vinci dedicates each year to the memory of its most illustrious citizen, the Estate dell'Ingegno (Summer of Genius). The stage features a rotating cast of actors, storytellers, lecturers, and musicians capable of blending entertainment with culture.
A key strength of Multiscena is its free admission policy until capacity is reached: a perfect opportunity to experience high-quality open-air theatre in an intimate, family-friendly setting. In case of bad weather, performances are usually moved to the Teatro di Vinci. Now approaching its thirtieth year, the festival is a staple for the residents of Vinci and the many visitors who flock to the Tuscan village during the summer.
In 2026, Multiscena once again lights up the summer in Vinci, with two evenings scheduled for Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19. The festival, part of the Estate dell'Ingegno calendar promoted by the Municipality of Vinci, is once again curated by the Giallo Mare Minimal Teatro company.
As per tradition, performances are held in the upper village, with free admission until capacity is reached. At the time of the date announcement, the artistic program has not yet been made public.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the organizers. The confirmed dates are Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, with evening performances in the upper village of Vinci with free admission. The lineup of artists and show titles will be announced in the weeks preceding the event on the Municipality of Vinci website and the Giallo Mare Minimal Teatro channels.
Performances are held in the upper village of Vinci, primarily in Piazza Guido Masi. In case of bad weather, the festival moves to the Teatro di Vinci, on Via Pierino da Vinci.
By car: Vinci is accessible via the SS67 and the FI-PI-LI highway (Empoli exit), approximately 40 km from Florence. By train: take the train to Empoli station on the Florence-Pisa line, then catch a bus to Vinci.
Free admission until capacity is reached.
