Floats, masks, and confetti in the heart of the Baianese area, Avellino province
In February 2026, the streets of Mugnano del Cardinale, a town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, were filled with confetti, masks, and music for the return of the Carnival. The initiative was promoted by the local Youth Forum, a group of young people driven by the desire to revitalize and promote their land, who chose the Carnival as their first major public event.
The organizers described this edition as «this first Carnival»: a declared starting point to build a permanent fixture in the calendar of the Baianese area, the inland region of Campania that stretches at the foot of the Partenio massif, between Irpinia and the Nola area.
The format chosen is the classic one for village festivals: two afternoon appointments, Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, both starting at 2:30 PM with different routes to traverse the town center from multiple directions.
The float, masked groups, and families in costume parade along the route; the arrival in the square turns into a collective party filled with music, confetti, and streamers.
The theme of the float remained top secret until the day of the parade, a communication strategy that fueled the town's curiosity in the preceding weeks. The population was not just invited to watch, but to participate in costume: this is the spirit the organizers highlighted in their thank-you message at the end of the event, when they thanked «all the people who supported us and everyone who attended».
Mugnano del Cardinale is no stranger to Carnival rites. The town has a documented tradition of the Carnival funeral, the burlesque funeral procession on Shrove Tuesday that accompanies the effigy of the dead Carnival through the streets to Piazza Cardinale, featuring mock priests, a brass band, and especially the «comare» (gossip women) mourning his passing. This ritual is widespread throughout Campania and holds strong symbolic value: it represents the burial of winter, and with it all the negativity left behind, to make way for spring. The Pro Loco «Rimettiamoci Insieme» and the Youth Forum have participated in the organization over the years.
The Carnival was made possible by the volunteer work of the Youth Forum, with the support of the Municipal Administration led by Mayor Alessandro Napolitano, the collaboration of the local Traffic Police for route safety, and the contribution of various local sponsors. This is a common model of volunteering in the small towns of inland Campania, where youth associations are often the true engine of cultural life.
Nestled at an altitude of about 250 meters along the route connecting Irpinia to Nola, the municipality of Mugnano del Cardinale is best known for the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena, a pilgrimage destination for over two centuries, and for the patronal feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie. The Carnival thus fits into a calendar already rich in religious, folkloric, and gastronomic events, but brings something different: a secular, youthful, and playful occasion capable of filling the squares in the middle of winter.
Announced at the beginning of February 2026 with the slogan «The Carnival returns», the edition brought masks, confetti, and music to the streets of Mugnano del Cardinale for two afternoons. The float, whose theme was kept secret until the very end, led the procession along with masked groups and families with children.
At the end of the event, the Youth Forum released a thank-you message addressed to the Municipal Administration and Mayor Alessandro Napolitano, the Traffic Police, sponsors, and all participants, defining the event as «an important starting point» for future editions. The strong participation of the community confirmed the desire to turn the Mugnano Carnival into a permanent fixture of the local calendar.
The theme of the float remained secret until the day of the parade. The population was invited to participate in costume on both days.
Mugnano del Cardinale is located along the road connecting Irpinia to Nola and borders the municipalities of Baiano, Quadrelle, Sirignano, Mercogliano, Monteforte Irpino, and Visciano. The most convenient way to reach it is by car; the nearest motorway exit and train stations are in the neighboring towns of the Baianese area.
During the parades, traffic along the route is regulated by the local Traffic Police. It is advisable to leave your car outside the procession route and reach Piazza Umberto I or Piazza Cardinale, the two arrival points, on foot.
Participation in the parades is free and open to all: there are no tickets required and no registration fees for masked groups.
