The centuries-old rite of the Madonna di Castello on Mount Somma
The Mountain Festival is the signature cultural event of Somma Vesuviana, a town in the province of Naples nestled on the northern slopes of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex in Campania. It is neither a food fair nor a staged show: it is a popular pilgrimage that draws thousands of people every spring along the trails of Mount Somma, leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Castello and the Cross atop the peak, offering a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples.
The roots of this devotion date back to 1631, when a violent eruption of Vesuvius destroyed part of the town and the chapel housing the image of the Virgin. The local population searched for the statue in the dark, lighting their way with torches; the discovery on the Saturday following Easter is the origin of the 'fire ritual' that has been repeated every year since.
The festival begins with 'o Sabato d' 'e Fuochi (the Saturday of Fires), the first Saturday after Easter. From the early hours of the morning, the paranze—groups of devotees accompanied by their own musicians—begin the climb toward Castello, singing along the paths. As dusk falls, the mountain lights up: originally, bonfires were fueled by farmers' pruning scraps, with fireworks added only much later. The paranze descending back to the valley illuminate the darkness with torches, reenacting the nocturnal search of 1631.
The most intense moment arrives on May 3rd, a day locals call 'o Tre 'a Croce. At dawn, the traditional climb to the Cross on the summit of Mount Somma begins. Throughout the day, masses are celebrated on the mountain ridge and in the Sanctuary; the paranze enter the church playing tammorre (frame drums) and triccheballacche (traditional percussion). In the late afternoon, the carts descend, and in the evening, all the paranze receive a final blessing. The event concludes with a descent into the ancient Casamale district, the fortified core that preserves the oldest urban history of the town.
The year 2026 will remain in the annals of the Mountain Festival for two contrasting reasons. On one hand, the absence of the fireworks display: the eleven paranze belonging to the Association for the Protection of the Rites of Mount Somma decided to comply with the ban linked to the new regional Environmental Impact Assessment procedure, which protects the biodiversity of the Natura 2000 network during the nesting season. On the other hand, the turnout: on May 3rd, the Castello area and the mountain trails welcomed a crowd that the elders of the Casamale district described as triple that of previous years, with faithful, hikers, and visitors arriving from all over Italy and abroad.
To manage the influx, the municipal administration re-proposed the free shuttle service between Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Castello, with departures every thirty minutes. The official notice published by the Municipality for April 11 indicated the service was active from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, managed by Area 6 — Municipal Police.
Despite the change in rules, the essence of the rite remained intact: dawn climb to the Cross, masses at the Sanctuary and on the mountain ridge, entry of the paranze with tammorre and triccheballacche, songs and tammurriate throughout the day, and the evening descent with torches toward the ancient Casamale village. The debate opened after the festival focused instead on the state of the area: dilapidated sidewalks and lacking services in the Castello area were highlighted by the local press as the real issues to address to turn this enthusiasm into stable development.
The main landmark is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III in the center of Somma Vesuviana. During the main event days, the Municipality operates a free shuttle service to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Castello area, running every 30 minutes. It is highly recommended to leave your car in town and avoid driving up the mountain.
The route to Castello and the Cross is on dirt paths: sturdy or hiking footwear, water, a hat, and sunscreen are essential. On peak days, the trails are very busy; starting early in the morning is advised.
Participation is free, as is the municipal shuttle. There are no tickets for the celebrations at the Sanctuary or for the mountain climb.
