The Japanese master and the Great Wave at Palazzo delle Paure
The Palazzo delle Paure, an exhibition venue in the heart of Lecco overlooking Lake Como, hosts a major exhibition dedicated to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), the most famous master of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The exhibition "Hokusai. The secret of the Wave that crosses Europe", open from March 21 to September 27, 2026, is an event of international appeal for the Lombard city.
The heart of the exhibition is the world-famous Great Wave of Kanagawa, one of the most recognizable and reproduced images in the world. The exhibition, curated by Paolo Linetti, director of the Mazzocchi Collection Museum of Oriental Art in Brescia, analyzes Hokusai's adherence to compositional principles similar to Western geometric canons, revealing the rigorous proportions and harmonies that structure his mature works.
Alongside the master's historical prints — from the whale hunt to Mount Fuji seen from the sea — the exhibition features a section dedicated to Japonisme, the movement that saw Western art fascinated by Japan at the end of the 19th century, and a section of contemporary art that contextualizes Hokusai's profound influence on European artistic languages.
The exhibition is produced by ViDi Cultural and Ponte43 in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco. As part of the tradition of major exhibitions at Palazzo delle Paure, it confirms Lecco's role, within the Province of Lecco and the Lombardy Region, as a cultural hub capable of hosting exhibitions of national and international importance.
