About Albero di Natale di Gubbio

Every December, the slope of Monte Ingino lights up like an immense Christmas tree: hundreds of coloured lights outline a shape over 750 metres high that rises from the walls of Gubbio up to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, where a star over a thousand square metres shines. Created in 1981 and listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest Christmas tree, it is entirely built and maintained by volunteers from Gubbio. The official lighting ceremony on December 7th is one of the most anticipated moments of Christmas in Umbria.

A tree as tall as a mountain

The World's Largest Christmas Tree is not a real tree, but an extraordinary illumination that transforms the entire slope of Monte Ingino, above Gubbio, into the silhouette of a Christmas tree. The structure is over 750 metres high with a base of about 450 metres, composed of hundreds of coloured light points connected by thousands of metres of electric cables. At the top, near the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, a large star exceeding a thousand square metres shines.

In the Guinness Book of Records since 1981

The initiative began in 1981 and since 1991 it has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest Christmas tree. It is a collective work: the volunteers of the Committee build, maintain, and light it up every year, symbolising the pride and identity of the Gubbio community.

A symbol for Umbria

Visible from kilometres away, the tree has become one of the symbols of Christmas in Umbria and throughout Italy. It is part of the wider 'Gubbio è Natale' (Gubbio is Christmas) programme, which fills the city with markets, lights, and attractions throughout the festive season, in the province of Perugia.

Albero di Natale di Gubbio — edition 2026

The 45th lighting of the World's Largest Christmas Tree is scheduled for December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, on Monte Ingino in Gubbio. The illumination remains lit every evening until January 11, 2027, the Sunday after Epiphany.

The 2026 edition of the World's Largest Christmas Tree continues the tradition started in 1981. The official lighting is scheduled for December 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, on the eve of the Immaculate Conception holiday, and the illumination remains visible every evening, from late afternoon until late at night, until January 11, 2027. Hundreds of coloured lights outline a shape over 750 metres high on the slope of Monte Ingino, culminating in the large star near the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The work, entirely created by volunteers from Gubbio, is accompanied by the 'Adopt a light' campaign and the 'Gubbio è Natale' programme.
