The main festival of Castronovo di Sicilia, a centuries-old devotion to the 1301 wooden Crucifix
The Most Holy Crucifix Festival is the most significant religious and popular event for Castronovo di Sicilia, a small town in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo, in Sicily. Locally known as the "Festa du tri di maju" (the festival of the third of May), it has its roots in ancient propitiatory rites linked to agricultural harvests and has for centuries represented the moment when the entire community reconnects with its identity.
The heart of the devotion is the wooden simulacrum of the Most Holy Crucifix, a work dating back to 1301 and kept in the town's Mother Church. It is around this sacred image, deeply rooted in popular sentiment, that the two days of festivities revolve: a tradition spanning over seven hundred years that continues to draw people from Castronovo back home, even from afar.
The highlight is the grand procession on May 3rd. In the afternoon, the churchyard of the Mother Church becomes the meeting point for the simulacra of the saints venerated in the town: the procession is led by San Vitale, the patron saint, followed by Saint George, Saint Rosalia, the Child Madonna, Saint Anne, and many others, each carried on the shoulders of their own devotees, historically linked to a specific social class or professional category.
After the Solemn Mass in the Mother Church, the procession winds through the streets of the town center amidst a large crowd, concluding with the return to the church and the traditional fireworks display that lights up the town's sky.
In ancient times, during the festival, Castronovo di Sicilia also hosted one of the most important fairs in the entire territory, a sign of the event's value not only in religious terms but also in economic and social ones. Still today, the program alternates sacred rites with moments of secular celebration: band music, the welcoming of authorities, and evening shows that animate the town on the eve of the procession.
For the people of Castronovo, the Most Holy Crucifix Festival is not just a religious recurrence, but the main event of the year: an occasion for returning home, meeting between generations, and renewing one's sense of belonging to the community. Those who visit Castronovo di Sicilia during these days discover one of the most authentic faces of the popular traditions of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition was held in Castronovo di Sicilia on May 2nd and 3rd. On Saturday, May 2nd, in the elementary school courtyard, a popular evening took place with cabaret by Sasà Salvaggio and a live concert by Danilo Sacco, the historic voice of the band Nomadi.
On Sunday, May 3rd, the main day, the churchyard of the Mother Church welcomed the town's saintly simulacra; after the Solemn Mass, the solemn procession of the Most Holy Crucifix began through the streets of the center, concluding with the traditional fireworks display.
Castronovo di Sicilia is located in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the SS 189 (Palermo-Agrigento) road, taking the exit towards the interior; from Palermo, the journey takes about an hour and a half. The festival and the procession take place in the historic center, around the Mother Church.
The festivities are concentrated around May 3rd, with an evening of entertainment on the eve and the solemn procession on the main day.
During the procession, the center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in areas outside the town and reach the Mother Church on foot. Please show respect for the devotional nature of the event.
