Heart and faith on the slopes of Monte Ausiliatrice, in the Vallo di Diano

The Most Holy Crucifix Festival is the defining event for San Pietro al Tanagro, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants overlooking the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno and the heart of inland Campania. Everything revolves around the small chapel built in 1899 on the summit of Monte Ausiliatrice, now better known as Monte del Crocifisso. Lacking access roads, the locals built it using only stones found on-site, quarried and squared directly on the mountain. Even today, the sanctuary can only be reached on foot along a steep, stepped path; at night, when illuminated, it appears suspended above the village like a star.
The festival day begins very early. Before dawn, the faithful tackle the climb to the sanctuary, often accompanied by the Stations of the Cross from the Calvary to the summit. Shortly after, the wooden statue of the Crucifix is carried on shoulders down toward the valley floor. The most anticipated moment is the encounter between the statue of the crucified Christ and that of the Addolorata, which takes place in the Setone area at the Parco dei Mulini: a silent, moving ritual greeted by fireworks and the brass band, which then accompanies the procession to the Mother Church of San Pietro Apostolo. The day continues with Eucharistic celebrations and, in the late afternoon, the grand procession through the village streets.
What truly makes this festival unique is the Guglia ritual, which takes place on the eve of the feast. It is a secular procession, held without clergy: a wooden structure in the shape of a Latin cross, built like a box open on the front and illuminated from within, is carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the festive, decorated streets, accompanied by the band. A canvas depicting the crucified Christ is mounted on the front, commissioned by the priest Don Giuseppe Procaccio from the Sant'Arsenio artist Ferdinando D'Urso and painted in tempera in reverse: the image is only revealed when the internal lights are switched on. The procession traditionally starts from the former home of Father Procaccio and has been held uninterruptedly since 1912.
In 2024, the cult of the Most Holy Crucifix of San Pietro al Tanagro, along with its Guglia procession, was inscribed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania (IPIC), a recognition announced publicly during the festivities. The municipality is also a member of the National Association of "Cities of the Most Holy Crucifix," which brings together devotional centers in Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, and Sicily, and has invested in the festival as a lever for slow and religious tourism.
Alongside the liturgical events—the seven-day preparation, dawn pilgrimages, and solemn masses in the Mother Church—a secular program organized by the municipality and local associations takes place every year: conferences and book presentations at the Multifunctional Center on Via Roma, civic ceremonies, illuminations, market stalls, and evening musical performances in Piazza Enrico Quaranta, the heart of village life. It is the moment when the village fills with emigrants returning for the occasion and visitors from neighboring towns in the Vallo di Diano.
San Pietro al Tanagro stands at an altitude of about 450 meters, at the foot of the Alburni Mountains and on the edge of the great Tanagro plain, between Sala Consilina, Sant'Arsenio, and Teggiano. From the sanctuary, the view embraces the entire Vallo di Diano, a protected area included in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park. A visit to the festival is therefore perfect to combine with discovering the village's historic center, with its Mother Church and 16th-century stone portal, as well as the nearby hamlets.
The festival traditionally falls on the third Sunday of September, preceded by a week of preparation and the eve featuring the Guglia. Those who want to experience the most intense moment must be prepared for an early start: the climb to the sanctuary begins before seven in the morning, when the air is still fresh and the valley is covered in mist.
The Most Holy Crucifix Festival returns in September 2026 to San Pietro al Tanagro, in the Vallo di Diano in the province of Salerno. The exact calendar has not yet been released: as every year, the program is announced by the municipality and the parish a few weeks before the event.
The structure of the festival, however, has been established for over a century: a week of preparation with the dawn climb along the Stations of the Cross, the eve with the Guglia ritual—the secular procession introduced in 1912 and inscribed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania—and, on the day of the feast, the pilgrimage to the sanctuary on Monte Ausiliatrice, the encounter between the statues of the Crucifix and the Addolorata at Parco dei Mulini, celebrations in the Mother Church, and the evening procession through the village streets, with a final musical show in Piazza Enrico Quaranta.
