The uphill race in the heart of Oasi Zegna, from Mosso to the Sanctuary of San Bernardo
The Mosso Vertical San Bernardo is one of the most cherished mountain running events in the Biella area. It takes place every year on April 25th in the village of Mosso, now part of the municipality of Valdilana—formed by the merger of Mosso, Trivero, Soprana, and Valle Mosso—in the Province of Biella, in the heart of Piedmont. The event, organized by Polisportiva Pietro Micca - Biella Running in collaboration with the local Pro Loco, combines athletic competition with a deep connection to the alpine landscape of the Oasi Zegna.
The route covers 6.2 kilometers with 800 meters of positive elevation gain, climbing steadily throughout. The start is in the Piazzetta delle Granaglie, in the historic center of Mosso, while the finish line is located at the Sanctuary of San Bernardo, a scenic viewpoint overlooking the surrounding landscape. Along the way, runners alternate between paved roads, mule tracks, and mountain trails, passing through woods, waterfalls, and ancient hamlets, while skirting the Santuario della Brughiera and the famous Panoramica Zegna.
The race is open to FIDAL-registered athletes, members of sports promotion organizations, and Runcard holders, but it also welcomes numerous non-competitive walkers who tackle the course at their own pace. The 2026 edition saw a record turnout with over 250 participants, a testament to the growing popularity of this spring tradition.
A distinctive feature of the Mosso Vertical is its charitable purpose: all proceeds from registration fees are donated to charity, reinforcing the bond between the race, the local community, and the values of solidarity. The event is also the inaugural race of the Gran Prix Verticale Biella-Valsesia, a circuit that brings together the best vertical races in the provinces of Biella and Vercelli.
Running the Mosso Vertical means immersing yourself in the protected landscape of the Oasi Zegna, a natural area home to lush woods, seasonal blooms, and panoramic views of the Biellese Alps. Between the charm of the mountain sanctuaries and the energy of the Mosso community, the race represents a perfect blend of sporting tradition, local identity, and a love for the Piedmontese mountains.
