A guided hike following in the footsteps of shepherds, from Rassa to the alpine pastures of Val Sorba
The Transhumance in the Valle dei Tremendi is a guided hike held in Rassa, a small municipality in the Province of Vercelli, in the heart of the Piedmontese Alps. The initiative leads participants along the ancient trails that climb from Rassa into Val Sorbaโthe "valley of the formidable"โup to the alpine pastures, following shepherds and their herds in one of the most characteristic rituals of the Valsesian mountain culture.
Rassa lies at the center of Val Sorba, where the Sorba and Gronda streams meet. The nickname "valley of the formidable" is rooted in local legends and historical events, including those linked to the deeds of Fra Dolcino. It is a wild, secluded environment defined by forests, high-altitude pastures, sparkling waters, and spontaneous bloomsโsuch as the delicate wild peonies that color the valley in early summer. Since November 2024, Rassa has been part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy network, a recognition that honors its historical beauty, natural environment, and local traditions.
Transhumance, the seasonal movement of herds to high-altitude pastures, is one of the oldest and most defining practices of the Alpine valleys. Walking alongside shepherds, amidst the sound of cowbells and grazing flocks, means connecting with a world that resists the passage of time. This excursion is not just a simple walk, but an opportunity for environmental education and discovery of the pastoral heritage of Valsesia, featuring naturalistic observations and stories related to the history and geography of the territory.
The event is part of the calendar of guided hikes organized by the Valsesia Protected Areas Management Authority, which offers annual themed outings focusing on nature, history, and landscapes across Monte Fenera, Upper Valsesia, and Val Sorba. The Transhumance in the Valle dei Tremendi concludes the spring program, guiding participants through the transition from spring to the Alpine summer.
