About Monumental Nativity Scene

Since 1966, the Terziere Castello has set up one of Italy's most fascinating monumental nativity scenes in the evocative 16th-century underground chambers of Palazzo della Corgna. Eight rooms, over 500 square meters, with sets featuring landscapes, rivers, waterfalls, and villages populated by hundreds of statues created by master artisans. Each year the theme changes, and no edition is the same: a unique Christmas journey in the heart of Città della Pieve, open from Christmas Day to Epiphany.

A Nativity Scene in the Palace's Underground Chambers

The Monumental Nativity Scene of Città della Pieve is one of Umbria's most beloved Christmas traditions. Set up since 1966 by the Nobile Terziere Castello, it comes to life in the evocative 16th-century underground chambers of Palazzo della Corgna, in the historic center of the village in the province of Perugia.

Eight Rooms, 500 Square Meters

The exhibition unfolds across eight large rooms and ancient cellars, covering over 500 square meters. The sets recreate landscapes, rivers, waterfalls, villages, and a replica of Città della Pieve itself, animated by hundreds of statues—shepherds, camels, spice vendors, water carriers, caravans—specially created by Italian master artisans in papier-mâché, terracotta, and resin.

An Ever-Changing Work of Art

What makes the Monumental Nativity Scene unique is that no two editions are the same: the theme and the sets change every year, often inspired by current social and environmental issues. The Terziere's volunteers work for about three months to bring the installation to life, combining tradition, craftsmanship, and visual and sound effects.

A Gesture of Solidarity

In addition to its artistic value, the Monumental Nativity Scene also has a charitable dimension: the proceeds are donated each year to support assistance projects for those in need. Visiting it means supporting a good cause.

Monumental Nativity Scene — edition 2026

The new edition of the Monumental Nativity Scene of Città della Pieve is open from December 25, 2025, to January 6, 2026, in the underground chambers of Palazzo della Corgna. As every year, the Terziere Castello offers a new installation, with a different theme and renewed sets populated by hundreds of artisan statues.

The 2025-2026 edition of the Monumental Nativity Scene is open for visits from December 25, 2025, to January 6, 2026, in the underground chambers of Palazzo della Corgna in Città della Pieve. This year's announced theme is 'Together We Can Make It', dedicated to Nature conservation.
