Monti is one of the oldest sites in Lunigiana. Known in ancient times as Venelia, it is among the earliest human settlements in the valley, as evidenced by the discovery of the famous statue-stelae. The village is dominated by the Castello Malaspina di Monti, built by the Malaspina family and later converted into a noble residence in the 16th century by Marquis Moroello Malaspina. From its vantage point, the fortress once controlled the Taverone valley and the ancient trade routes toward the Apennines.
