The spring festival in the village of Monti, Lunigiana
Monti in Festa is the spring event that draws locals and visitors alike to the village of Monti, part of the municipality of Licciana Nardi, in Lunigiana (Massa-Carrara, Tuscany). For one full Sunday, the village transforms into an open-air market, buzzing with stalls, exhibitors, and the cheerful energy of a community gathering outdoors after the winter.
The heart of the day lies in the stalls winding through the village streets, accompanied by hobbyist stands and local farms showcasing the best of Lunigiana's traditional products. The festival is particularly family-friendly:
It is the ideal occasion for a family stroll, an outdoor snack, and some shopping among the stalls, all in a genuine and relaxed village atmosphere.
Monti is one of the oldest sites in Lunigiana. Known in ancient times as Venelia, it is among the earliest human settlements in the valley, as evidenced by the discovery of the famous statue-stelae. The village is dominated by the Castello Malaspina di Monti, built by the Malaspina family and later converted into a noble residence in the 16th century by Marquis Moroello Malaspina. From its vantage point, the fortress once controlled the Taverone valley and the ancient trade routes toward the Apennines. Attending Monti in Festa means enjoying a day of celebration in a stunning historical setting, just steps away from the castle and the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Part of the rich calendar of festivals and fairs in the municipality of Licciana Nardi and the Lunigiana area, Monti in Festa is a community event that celebrates the village's identity and its local producers. It is a simple, popular gathering defined by tradition, good food, and hospitality—well worth a stop during a spring trip to this corner of Tuscany bordering Emilia.
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, the village of Monti, a hamlet of Licciana Nardi (MS), hosted the traditional spring edition of Monti in Festa. Stalls, artisan stands, and local farm booths were set up along the village streets, while a carousel was available for the little ones. There was no shortage of sweets and focaccine prepared by the ANSPI Santa Maria Assunta.
