Allegorical floats, costumes, and tradition in the heart of the Belice Valley
The Montevago Carnival is the festival that colors the streets of Montevago—a small town in the Belice Valley, in the province of Agrigento—every year between February and March. For several days, the town becomes a grand open-air stage featuring parades of papier-mâché floats, groups in vibrant costumes, and revelers of all ages. It is a deeply cherished event for the community, widely regarded as the "most beautiful Carnival in the Belice Valley."
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats, authentic works of art crafted from papier-mâché by master builders and local associations. The floats depict satirical, fantastical, and topical themes, accompanied by processions of costumed groups dancing through the streets to the rhythm of music. The months of preparation involve associations, schools, and local citizens, making the Carnival a vital moment for community bonding and regional promotion.
Alongside the grand evening parades, the Carnival also dedicates time to the little ones with the "Grand Carnival Party," an afternoon of games, dancing, and family entertainment. Music, color, and creativity are the common threads, creating a joyful atmosphere that involves the entire town and visitors from neighboring municipalities like Santa Margherita di Belice, Menfi, and Sambuca di Sicilia.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Montevago with the support of the Regional Department of Tourism. Admission to all events is free. The Montevago Carnival is a highlight of the Belice Valley and Agrigento province event calendar, perfectly blending folk tradition with entertainment in one of Sicily's most historically and culturally rich areas.
The 36th edition of the Montevago Carnival took place in Montevago (province of Agrigento) from February 20 to 23, 2026, returning to animate the historic center with allegorical floats, costumes, and shows. The event was organized by the Municipality of Montevago, led by Mayor Margherita La Rocca Ruvolo, with the support of the Regional Department of Tourism, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated events in the Belice Valley.
The parades of allegorical floats and costumed groups traveled through the city streets every evening, transforming the town into a massive open-air stage filled with color, music, and creativity. A particularly heartfelt moment was dedicated to children, with the grand carnival party animated by the Coro degli Angeli.
Montevago is located in the Belice Valley, in the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (take the Castelvetrano or Santa Ninfa exit) and continuing along the provincial roads toward the valley. The nearest airport is Palermo "Falcone-Borsellino," about an hour and a half away by car.
The parades and events are held in the historic center of Montevago, along the main streets and town squares. The presentation of the floats takes place at the Città dei Ragazzi.
Access to all Carnival events is free. For up-to-date program information, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Montevago.
