The District Tournament, the summer soul of Montemurlo

In the heart of Tuscany, just a few kilometres from Prato and Florence, the Municipality of Montemurlo hosts its most beloved popular event every summer: the District Tournament. This is not just a simple football tournament, but a true celebration of identity that both divides and unites the town, pitting the seven districts into which the municipal territory is historically divided against one another: Bagnolo, Popolesco, Fornacelle, Oste, Morecci, Novello, and Strada Mulino.

A tradition spanning over thirty years

Reaching its 35th edition in 2026, the District Tournament was born in the early nineties and has grown to become the event that defines the Montemurlo summer. Matches are played at the Ado Nelli Stadium in the hamlet of Oste, where every evening in June and July, the stands fill with fans of all ages. The 2025 final recorded a record-breaking crowd, with over a thousand spectators in the stands, a testament to how deeply rooted this competition is in the community.

Much more than a football match

What makes the District Tournament special is the spirit of belonging: each district prepares its own jerseys, chants, and supporters, transforming the Oste pitch into a theatre of passion and healthy rivalry. The matches are surrounded by moments of conviviality, with the community gathering around the game amidst music, entertainment, and social opportunities. The initiative, organised by the District Committee in collaboration with the "Il Borgo della Rocca" association, Montemurlo Calcio, and UISP, and sponsored by the Municipality of Montemurlo, also has a strong focus on solidarity and local engagement.

Seven districts, one city

Bagnolo, the defending champion after winning the 34th edition, defends its title in a challenge that involves the entire Montemurlo community. For those visiting the province of Prato in summer, attending an evening of the District Tournament means experiencing the most authentic, non-touristy side of Tuscany, where sport is above all an occasion for meeting and collective celebration.
