A running race and nature walk through the hills of Lake Montedoglio in Sansepolcro
The Montedoglio Lake Eco Run is one of the most popular fixtures in the Upper Tiber Valley running calendar. It takes place in the village of Gragnano, in the municipality of Sansepolcro (Arezzo province), attracting hundreds of athletes, amateurs, and walkers from across Tuscany and neighboring regions every year. The event is organized by ASD Eco Team Sansepolcro, with the support of local partners and in collaboration with local entities such as Walk Tiberina.
The heart of the event is the 11.5 km race, offered in both competitive and non-competitive versions. The route starts at the Gragnano sports field and winds along the hills bordering the Montedoglio reservoir, alternating between asphalt and dirt roads before returning to the sports field, where the finish line and awards area are set up. Along the way, participants enjoy stunning views of the Montedoglio Dam and the rural landscapes of the Tiber Valley, a natural setting that distinguishes this race from typical urban road races.
The day is not just for competitive runners. The Eco Walk, covering a shorter route of about 9 km, is designed for nature lovers of all ages who want to experience the lake at a more leisurely pace. There is also space for the little ones, with youth races dedicated to the 'Primi passi', 'Esordienti', and 'Ragazzi/e' categories, which kick off the morning of sport.
The Lake Eco Run is more than just a sporting challenge: a portion of the proceeds is donated to the 'Il Cuore si Scioglie' Foundation to support charitable projects. Over the years, the event has also hosted side initiatives, such as the AVIS Sansepolcro stand to promote blood and plasma donation. It is this blend of competition, nature, and social commitment that makes the event a cherished moment for the community of Sansepolcro and the entire Tiber Valley.
The 14th edition of the Montedoglio Lake Eco Run will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, with the start and finish at the Gragnano sports field in Sansepolcro. The proven format is confirmed: an 11.5 km race in both competitive and non-competitive versions along the hills of the lake, an Eco Walk for walkers of all ages, and youth races for the younger categories. As per tradition, part of the proceeds will be donated to charity.
Based on the established structure of previous editions (final times will be confirmed by the organization closer to the event):
Full details of the start times will be published by the organization on the official Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the race.
The start and finish lines are at the Gragnano sports field, a village of Sansepolcro (AR). By car, Sansepolcro is accessible via the E45 (Sansepolcro exit) and the SS73. The nearest train station is Sansepolcro, on the Central Umbrian Railway line.
