The Cilento village turns into an open-air nativity scene amidst alleys, lights, and performers
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Montecorice Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events in the Cilento region. Every December, the historic center of the village, located in the Municipality of Montecorice (Province of Salerno, Campania), turns into an open-air theater: the stone alleys, courtyards, and ancient portals become the natural backdrop for a Nativity re-enactment animated by performers, music, and lights.
This is not a static display to be viewed from afar. The public walks through the village following a guided path, encountering angels, shepherds, artisans at work, and the main characters of the nativity scene, scene by scene. Dances and songs accompany the visit, while scenic lighting restores the suspended atmosphere of Christmas Eve to the alleys. It is a collective story, built by the inhabitants themselves, who create the sets, costumes, and settings every year.
The event was born in 2022 and immediately won over the public, quickly becoming a classic of the Cilento Christmas calendar. The second edition was held on December 15-16, 2023, the third on December 14-15, 2024, and the fourth on December 13-14, 2025. The format has remained the same, yet enriched year after year: Christmas markets, tastings of typical products, and street artist performances have been added to the Nativity scenes.
The visit unfolds through the streets of the old village, with the entrance at Piazzetta San Biagio. Participants walk through the representation, passing by reconstructed workshops and living tableaux. Key elements of the route include:
Alongside the performance, the village hosts Christmas markets featuring local crafts and tastings of traditional holiday products. It is an opportunity to discover Cilento winter cuisine, made of simple ingredients and recipes linked to the agricultural calendar, in a territory known primarily for its extra virgin olive oil and the Mediterranean diet.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Montecorice with the contribution of the associations Actor Sud and Il Contrappasso, and technical support for lights and audio from Art Sound Service. The participation of local volunteers, who manage the sets and perform as actors, is crucial. In 2024, the inauguration was entrusted to Monsignor Vincenzo Calvosa, Bishop of the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and blessing.
Montecorice is a small town of about 2,700 inhabitants in the Province of Salerno, in the heart of Cilento, a short distance from the sea and olive-covered hills. The old village, with its narrow streets and stone portals, offers an ideal natural setting for a living nativity: no large installations are needed because the town itself tells the story of the peasant civilization being portrayed. For those visiting Campania during the Christmas period, it is an authentic way to connect with the life of a Cilento village outside the beach season.
The Montecorice Living Nativity does not focus on large numbers but on attention to detail and atmosphere. The free-admission formula with mandatory booking allows visitors to be spread out throughout the evening, enjoying the route without crowds at a pace that leaves time to observe every scene. It is an event suitable for families and those looking for a Christmas tied to popular traditions rather than commercial displays.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Montecorice Living Nativity. Communications regarding the event usually arrive between November and the first days of December through the channels of the Municipality of Montecorice and the associations Actor Sud and Il Contrappasso.
If the event follows the calendar of previous editions, it will take place in December, with the route set up in the historic center and the entrance from Piazzetta San Biagio. We recommend checking the information on the Municipality's official website before planning your visit.
