The winter trail race that kicks off the Marsica running season in Trasacco
The Monte Labbrone Winter Trail has become a staple of the Abruzzo running calendar and one of the most anticipated winter sporting events in the town of Trasacco, in the province of L'Aquila. Every year in early February, this small village overlooking the Fucino plain becomes the starting point for a trail running race that blends sport, nature, and community, effectively launching the mountain running season in the Marsica area.
The competitive course covers 13 kilometers with approximately 400 meters of elevation gain. It is 80% off-road, featuring technical sections and gradients reaching up to 38%. Starting from Via Roma in the center of Trasacco, athletes climb the trails to reach the summit of Monte Labbrone at about 1,100 meters above sea level. From there, the view sweeps across the entire Fucino plain, the ancient reclaimed lake that defines the landscape of the Marsica. Refreshment stations are provided at kilometers 4 and 9, as well as at the finish line.
Alongside the competitive race, the event offers a non-competitive walk on the same route, designed for those who wish to experience Monte Labbrone without the pressure of the clock. This is one of the key features that makes the Winter Trail an event open to everyone, attracting families, hikers, and curious participants alongside seasoned athletes.
The Monte Labbrone Winter Trail is part of the Corri Marsica UISP Abruzzo circuit, serving as one of the first events of the season. Organized by the sports association ASD Plus Ultra, led by Alvise Di Salvatore, the event has grown over the years into a benchmark for running in Central Italy, attracting runners not only from Abruzzo but also from neighboring regions.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Winter Trail promotes the Trasacco and Marsica area, highlighting the trails and mountain landscapes at the foot of the peaks surrounding the Fucino. Prizes for the top finishers and category winners often include local artisanal products, reflecting the deep connection between the race and the food and wine traditions of the Abruzzo region.
On Sunday, February 1, 2026, Trasacco hosted the fourteenth edition of the Monte Labbrone Winter Trail, with the start in the town center and over 150 athletes tackling the traditional 13-kilometer route with 400 meters of elevation gain. In the men's category, victory went to Guido Del Monaco (Runcard), who finished in 1h04'22". The club with the most finishers was the event organizer, ASD Plus Ultra, led by Alvise Di Salvatore. The event, part of the Corri Marsica UISP circuit, concluded with a positive outcome, reaffirming the appeal of this winter trail at the foot of Monte Labbrone.
