I Sentieri dei Lupi is one of the most established and popular mountain bike granfondos in Abruzzo. The event takes place in late September in Collarmele, a village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled at the foot of the Sirente massif in the province of L'Aquila. Every year, the event attracts bikers from across Central and Southern Italy, drawn by a technical, spectacular course and the genuine atmosphere of a town that opens its doors to sports enthusiasts.

A course fully immersed in nature

The heart of the event is the competitive race, a mixed-hilly course of approximately 54 kilometers with about 1,570 meters of elevation gain, 99% of which is unpaved: a guarantee of pure fun and authentic mountain biking. The route traverses the trails of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, climbs through pastures and forests, and runs alongside the imposing wind farm that characterizes the plateau, offering breathtaking environmental views. For those seeking a less demanding experience, a shorter non-competitive cycle-touring route is also available, perfect for those who want to enjoy the landscape without the pressure of a stopwatch.

Part of the Abruzzo MTB Cup and Rampitek circuits

I Sentieri dei Lupi is part of the Abruzzo MTB Cup calendar, the Rampitek circuit (Red group), and the I Sentieri del Sole e dei Sapori series, under the aegis of the Italian Cycling Federation. The event often serves as the final stage of the Abruzzo MTB Cup season, featuring the awards ceremony for the category winners of the entire circuit. Nearly 200 athletes, including both elite and master riders, typically line up at the start for one of the most heartfelt races in the Marsica region.

Sport, flavors, and hospitality

The granfondo is more than just a competition; it is a community celebration. After the race, the local women prepare a hearty pasta party that celebrates traditional local cuisine, while the warm hospitality of the people of Collarmele has become a hallmark of the event's charm.
