Mountain running in the Sicani Mountains, through the forests and vistas of inland Sicily
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Monte Cammarata Trail is one of the most anticipated events in the Sicilian trail running calendar. It takes place in Cammarata, a small village perched in the province of Agrigento, at the foot of Mount Cammarata, the highest peak in the Sicani Mountains. The race leads athletes along paths immersed in woods, beech forests, and clearings, featuring challenging climbs, steep descents, and panoramic stretches that offer sweeping views over inland Sicily.
The main route measures approximately 20 km with over 1,180 meters of positive elevation gain: a varied and technical course, perfect for those seeking a true mountain challenge. Over the years, the event has also introduced shorter distances and non-competitive trials, ranging from a gentle walk-trail to the Bimbo & Family Trail, designed to introduce children and families to running in nature. The start and finish lines are located in the upper part of the village, near the sanctuary of Santa Maria Cacciapensieri.
The event is organized as part of the Trail Sicilia Challenge, the circuit that brings together the island's main trail races, and is listed among the UTMB Index Races, the international qualification system linked to the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. For participants, this means testing themselves on a certified track and accumulating points valid for major global trail events.
Running in Cammarata means discovering a lesser-known corner of Sicily: a mountain landscape made of forests, springs, and ancient paths, far from the most beaten tourist tracks. The Monte Cammarata Nature Reserve and the views over the Sicani provide the perfect backdrop for a day of sport and celebration, traditionally concluding with an awards ceremony and a pasta party in the village.
The 2026 Monte Cammarata Trail is expected in early May, the period when the race has taken place in recent editions. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Trail Sicilia Challenge circuit organization.
Subject to confirmation, the event is expected to feature the competitive route of approximately 20 km with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain on the trails of the Sicani Mountains, accompanied by the usual shorter races and the Bimbo & Family Trail. For the final date and registration, please refer to the official website and social media channels of the Trail Sicilia Challenge.
Cammarata can be reached by car via the SS 189 Palermo-Agrigento road, taking the Cammarata-San Giovanni Gemini exit. The meeting point and start are in the upper part of the village, near the sanctuary of Santa Maria Cacciapensieri. The nearest airports are Palermo Falcone-Borsellino and Catania Fontanarossa.
Registrations are handled by the Trail Sicilia Challenge circuit organization. Information and regulations are available on the official website and via email at [email protected].
This is a technical mountain route: trail shoes, water supplies, and clothing suitable for the weather conditions of the Sicani Mountains—which can be variable even in spring—are highly recommended.
