The ecological craft and tradition market of Montalbano in San Baronto
In the heart of the Montalbano hills, the Montalbano Ecological Labor Fair is one of the most beloved spring events in the Lamporecchio area, in the province of Pistoia. It takes place every year on May 1st, Labor Day, in the picturesque village of San Baronto, overlooking the hills between Valdinievole and Valdarno. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Amici di San Baronto Aps with the patronage of the Municipality of Lamporecchio.
The core theme of the fair is "ecological labor": a market featuring artisans, hobbyists, farmers, and artists offering goods made from natural and recycled materials. Stalls feature items made of straw, wicker, ceramics, wood, wrought iron, and glass, as well as yarns, embroidery, plants, paintings, and recycled toys. There is no shortage of local Montalbano produce: cheeses, cured meats, honey, olive oil, and wine from local farms.
Throughout the day, the "La Fraschetta" green area comes alive with entertainment for all ages. The "Gioco Giocattolo sul…filo della memoria" association offers traditional vintage games. In the afternoon, the Maggiaioli di Bagnolo perform their traditional May Day songs, followed by street artist Lorenzo Cecchi with juggling, magic, balancing acts, fire shows, and soap bubbles. For children, there is Clown Semola and face painting.
A place of honor is reserved for the Brigidini di Lamporecchio, the anise-flavored sweet wafer recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product: during the fair, you can watch them being made live using historic irons and enjoy them fresh. A widespread exhibition also showcases works by students from the "G. Dei" primary school dedicated to the traditions of San Baronto, while a charity fair is held in the parish rooms.
With free entry, a food stand managed by the Pro Loco, and large green spaces for picnics, the Montalbano Fair is the ideal destination to spend May 1st outdoors, surrounded by tradition, nature, and conviviality in one of the most authentic corners of the Pistoia-side Montalbano.
The 37th edition brought Via della Chiesa, Piazza Fra' G. Giraldi, and the "La Fraschetta" green area to life with the traditional market of artisans, hobbyists, farmers, and artists.
Program highlights: vintage games by the "Gioco Giocattolo sul…filo della memoria" association, afternoon performances by the Maggiaioli di Bagnolo and street artist Lorenzo Cecchi with juggling, magic, balancing, fire, and soap bubbles, plus Clown Semola and face painting for the little ones. There was also space for the production and tasting of Brigidini di Lamporecchio and a charity fair in the parish rooms.
May 1st, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, in San Baronto (a hamlet of Lamporecchio, PT): Via della Chiesa, Piazza Fra' Giuseppino Giraldi, and the "La Fraschetta" green area. In case of bad weather, the fair is postponed to the following Sunday.
San Baronto can be reached by car from Lamporecchio along the Montalbano provincial road. A free shuttle bus runs from the campsite area, operating from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
