Molinella Eel and Frog Festival (Winter Edition)

A Festival of Flavors from the Bolognese Lowlands

The Molinella Eel and Frog Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in the plain east of Bologna. It takes place in the hamlet of Traghetto, in the square of the former Eridania Sugar Factory, along Provincial Road 7, on the border between the Municipality of Molinella and the Ferrara area. The winter edition opens the festival season with six days spread between late February and early March, before the spring edition in May.

Eel and Frogs, the Tradition of the Valleys

The heart of the festival lies in the typical specialties of the valley cuisine: grilled eel, fried frogs, and stewed frogs, dishes rooted in the history of the lowlands' valleys and canals, where catching eels and frogs was part of daily life. Alongside these signature dishes, the menu offers seafood starters like Taranto-style mussels, seafood risotto, and salmon or ragù tagliolini, as well as grilled fish, monkfish, cuttlefish and shrimp skewers, mixed fried seafood, and polenta. For meat lovers, there are grilled mutton and sausages, with side dishes of fries and salad. To finish, trolley desserts accompanied by house and bottled wines.

Organization and Convivial Atmosphere

The festival is organized by the "Walter Tinarelli" PD Club of Molinella, which transforms the Traghetto square into a large, covered popular restaurant each year. The atmosphere is that of the simple and welcoming Emilia-Romagna village festivals, with communal tables, service provided by volunteers, and affordable prices. The format includes dinner on Saturdays and lunch on Sundays, with the option of takeaway for those who want to bring home the traditional dishes.

Molinella and the Bolognese Plain

Molinella is located in the eastern plain of the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna, an area of reclamation, canals, and countryside that has shaped a cuisine linked to freshwater and local produce. The Eel and Frog Festival is one of the most authentic expressions of this gastronomic identity and represents, for residents and visitors alike, an opportunity to rediscover flavors that might otherwise be lost.

Given the turnout, table reservation is mandatory: book by calling the number provided by the organizers, generally starting a few days before the opening. Takeaway service is available shortly before the start of dinners and lunches.
