About Mojoca

Every August, the historic center of Moio della Civitella, in the heart of Cilento, transforms into an open-air theater: this is Mojoca, an international street artists festival established in 2007. Acrobats, jugglers, clowns, tightrope walkers, musicians, and fire-eaters bring the streets, alleys, and squares to life from 8:30 PM until 2:30 AM, featuring around thirty simultaneous shows, afternoon workshops, and completely free admission.

When a Cilento village becomes a stage

The Mojoca โ€“ International Street Artists Festival is one of the most recognizable events in the summer of the province of Salerno. Born in August 2007 from the initiative of a group of local youths, it takes place every year in the historic center of Moio della Civitella, a small town in Campania overlooking the inland hills of Cilento. The name itself reflects the spirit of the event: Mojoca comes from the union of Moio, the village hosting the festival, and the local dialect verb joca, meaning to play and have fun.

For four consecutive evenings, the ancient village changes its skin. Alleys, stairways, open spaces, and small squares become performance spots, illuminated by torches and light installations. There is no single stage or fixed seating: the audience walks, chooses, stops, and retraces their steps. It is a formula that has made Mojoca a unique case in the Campania landscape and which, in 2018, earned it a mention among the fifteen best European street artist festivals in a ranking curated by Expedia.

Twenty spots, thirty simultaneous shows

The organization of the event is precise. There are about twenty artist spots, divided between the main program and the Off section, dedicated to emerging talents, in addition to the roving performances that traverse the village. The result is about thirty performances that follow one another simultaneously and without pause from 8:30 PM until 2:30 AM: those who arrive early and stay until late at night can only see a part of them, and that is exactly the game.

The disciplines on stage

The programming covers all the souls of contemporary street art:

  • Aerial acrobatics, Cyr wheel and German wheel, contortionism
  • Tightrope walking and juggling, including fire versions
  • Clowning, mime, physical comedy, and street theater
  • Illusionism and close-up magic
  • Living statues and performance installations
  • Live music with brass street bands and percussion, beatbox, acoustic ensembles
  • Night parades illuminated by fire and accompanied by music

Workshops, crafts, and Cilento cuisine

Mojoca doesn't just live at night. In the afternoon, the program opens with workshops held by the artists themselves, open to children, teenagers, and adults: juggling, balancing, body expression, and circus introduction. Alongside the shows, there is a craft fair with artisan stalls and refreshment points dedicated to Cilento cuisine, where you can taste the typical products of a territory that gave its name and history to the Mediterranean diet.

A green and free-entry festival

Admission is free for all evenings: the festival relies on the work of the volunteers of the Mojoca Cultural Association and the support of institutions. The event is sponsored by the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno, the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, and the Municipality of Moio della Civitella. For several editions, the association has also been pursuing an environmental sustainability path, with attention to waste sorting and waste reduction along the visitor route.

Logistically, a shuttle service is provided for all evenings, as well as parking areas with dedicated traffic management and campsite and camper areas, in addition to a map with the downloadable program and a WhatsApp channel for real-time updates.

Moio della Civitella and Cilento

Moio della Civitella is located in the Cilento hinterland, a short distance from Vallo della Lucania and the main sites of the National Park. The toponym Civitella refers to the Lucanian fortified wall that dominates the town, one of the most significant archaeological testimonies in the area. Those who come up for the festival find much more than four nights of entertainment: a village of a few thousand inhabitants that proves capable of welcoming tens of thousands of visitors, an hour's drive from the beaches of Ascea, Pisciotta, and Palinuro and the ruins of Velia and Paestum.

Mojoca โ€” edition 2026

The twentieth edition of Mojoca takes place from August 9th to 12th, 2026, in the historic center of Moio della Civitella. Over thirty artists, including international names and emerging talents, bring the streets, alleys, and squares to life from 8:30 PM to 2:30 AM, with afternoon workshops, a craft fair, and Cilento cuisine. Admission is free for all four evenings.

Mojoca 2026, the 20th edition

The milestone of twenty editions arrives in August 2026, and the Mojoca Cultural Association has announced it well in advance: four days, from Sunday, August 9th to Wednesday, August 12th, with a program that the organization describes as the most extensive ever put together, featuring over thirty artists, including international stars and emerging talents.

The formula remains the one that made the festival recognizable: the village closed to traffic and transformed into a performance route, about twenty fixed spots divided between the main program and the Off section, roving performers moving through the alleys, and night parades illuminated by fire. Performances follow one another without pause from 8:30 PM to 2:30 AM, with about thirty simultaneous shows.

In the afternoons, workshops led by the artists themselves return, open to all ages, along with training meetings designed for those approaching street art. The picture is completed by the craft fair and food points dedicated to Cilento products. Access is free; shuttle service, parking areas, and camping/camper areas are provided.
