About Miliarium Romanum

On July 31, 2026, the Roman district of Primavalle hosts the first edition of the Miliarium Romanum, a night road race that brings the ancient Roman mile back to life: 1480 meters to be run at full speed through the streets of Municipio XIV. The race starts at 8:00 PM from Piazza Alfonso Capecelatro, featuring qualifying heats and a final to determine the fastest athletes. An event that blends competitive spirit, Roman history, and a neighborhood festival under the evening lights.

Miliarium Romanum: Racing the Roman Mile in Primavalle

On Friday, July 31, 2026, the Primavalle district in Rome's Municipio XIV Monte Mario will host the inaugural Miliarium Romanum - The Primavalle Mile, an evening road race organized by A.S.D. Podistica Primavalle with the support of Municipio XIV. The event was born with a clear vision: to bring the ancient Roman unit of measurement, the mile, back to the streets of the Capital and transform it into a pure speed race open to all registered athletes.

The Roman Mile Distance

The event's name pays homage to the miliarium, the milestone that marked distances along the great consular roads of ancient Rome. The Roman mile corresponded to approximately 1480 meters: this is the distance chosen for the race, a short and intense stretchโ€”far from the usual ten-kilometer runsโ€”that rewards explosive speed, rhythm, and the ability to manage intense effort. Running the Miliarium Romanum means challenging yourself against a fragment of the city's history, paced by the precision of modern chronometers.

The Course and Race Format

The course, entirely on asphalt and well-lit by public street lighting, starts at Piazza Alfonso Capecelatro, continues along Via Federico Borromeo, turns at Piazza Clemente XI, and returns to the starting point. The format includes qualifying heats organized based on the athletes' registration times: the top five from each heat advance to the final to compete for the podium. The total number of heats, both men's and women's, will not exceed eight. The official ranking is determined by chip timing managed by Race Chrono Service.

A Sporting and Community Event

Beyond the competitive aspect, the Miliarium Romanum is designed as an evening celebration for the entire neighborhood. The race takes place at night, bringing the squares of Primavalle to life as spectators cheer on the athletes competing on the short city circuit. The race is open to adults registered with FIDAL, athletes from recognized Sports Promotion Bodies, and Runcard holders with a valid competitive medical certificate.

Primavalle, Rome, and Municipio XIV

Primavalle is one of the most populous districts in the northwestern quadrant of Rome, in the Lazio region, historically linked to the city's urban expansion in the 20th century. With this first edition, Podistica Primavalle aims to place the district on the rich calendar of Roman and Lazio running events, offering a unique appointment that combines sport, historical memory, and neighborhood life. A debut designed to become a classic of the Roman summer running season over the years.
