The folk festival that opens up the squares and doorways of Sessa Cilento's historic center
Miezzo a' chiazza e 'indo ai purtuni is the folk festival of Sessa Cilento, a small town in the Province of Salerno, Campania, in the heart of the Cilento National Park. The name, in the local Cilento dialect, means «in the middle of the square and inside the doorways» and says it all: here, the festival has no single stage or enclosure, but unfolds along the streets of the historic center, entering house entrances, squares, and courtyards that, for one night, become shared spaces once again. It is a simple and highly successful format, which reaches its fifth edition in 2026 and spans three consecutive evenings, between the end of July and the first day of August.
The heart of the event is a walk that revives the village's ancient customs. The Rione Caposessa serves as the starting point for the procession, which then winds through the streets of the historic center, decorated for the occasion and accompanied by folk music and singing, all the way to Largo dell'Addolorata. Here, the decorated doorways host musicians and singers, while further on, in the Rione Piedisessa, the festival culminates in front of the so-called «bride's doorway», where an ancient propitiatory ritual linked to the prosperity of the home and family is re-enacted.
In past editions, the event has opened around 8:00 PM, and a shuttle service departing from Rione Piedisessa has been provided—a valuable solution in a village where streets are narrow and parking is limited.
The culinary aspect is not left to anonymous stalls: it is the families of Sessa Cilento who prepare and serve traditional dishes on long tables set up along the route. The menu tells the story of the Mediterranean diet in its most domestic and authentic Cilento version:
Along the route, you will also find stalls dedicated to local agricultural products and crafts, and in Piazza Pompeo Lebano, the Agriculture and Business Development desks are set up, offering free consultations for those looking to start a business in the area: a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the initiative, designed not just as an evening of entertainment, but as an opportunity to promote the village.
The soundtrack is that of tradition: tammurriate, canti a distesa, accordions, and chitarre battenti resonating among the doorways. For the 2026 edition, a concert by the folk music group Temèia is scheduled in Sessa Cilento on Friday, July 31st at 11:30 PM. The format of the route ensures that the music is never concentrated in one single spot: you walk and encounter different groups, in a continuous transition between sounds and flavors.
Sessa Cilento is a town of a few hundred inhabitants on the slopes of Monte della Stella, the mountain that gives its name to the ancient Cilento and dominates this stretch of the hinterland just a few kilometers from the sea of Acciaroli and Casal Velino. The town is known as «the village of mills» due to the historical presence of water mills along the area's streams, and today it is at the center of village regeneration projects and the promotion of Mediterranean cuisine. Visiting the festival therefore also means discovering a territory that remains off the beaten path of the major Cilento coast tourist circuits.
The event is promoted and organized by the Laboratorio Monte Stella APS association, in collaboration with the Municipality of Sessa Cilento and local associations. Program updates are primarily shared through the festival's social media channels; for information, you can email [email protected].
In 2026, Miezzo a' chiazza e 'indo ai purtuni reaches its fifth edition and extends to three evenings: Thursday, July 30th, Friday, July 31st, and Saturday, August 1st. The village of Sessa Cilento, in the Province of Salerno, prepares to reopen its doorways for a journey that weaves together home cooking, singing, and the rituals of the Cilento peasant tradition.
Local families cook and serve traditional dishes on long tables distributed along the route: pizza cilentana, lagane e ceci, ciambotta, and muligname mbuttunate. The route, as per tradition, starts from Rione Caposessa and crosses the decorated streets of the historic center up to Largo dell'Addolorata, where the decorated doorways host musicians and singers.
In Piazza Pompeo Lebano, the Agriculture and Business Development desks are active, offering free consultations for businesses and new entrepreneurial ideas in the area, while along the walk, you will find stalls with local agricultural products and crafts.
First evening of the festival: opening of the food and wine route through the squares and doorways of the historic center, with refreshment points set up by local families and associations, accompanied by folk music.
Closing evening with the continuation of the gastronomic route, live folk music, and the re-enactment of the village's ancient rituals, including the propitiatory «bride's doorway» ritual in Rione Piedisessa.
The detailed program for each evening is released by the organizers on the festival's official social media channels.
