A day among the olive groves of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, in the heart of the Monti Dauni
Merenda nell'Oliveta is the annual spring event that transforms the olive groves of Castelluccio Valmaggiore—a village nestled in the Monti Dauni hills of the Foggia province—into a meeting place centered on the values of extra virgin olive oil and rural heritage. The initiative is part of a major national project promoted by the National Association of Oil Cities, which involves hundreds of olive-growing municipalities across Italy during the same period.
The day takes place on the L'Erario family estate, set within the local olive-growing landscape. The program blends nature, knowledge, and conviviality: it begins with a walk to the olive grove, continues with a guided tour focused on the evolution of cultivation techniques, and concludes with an extra virgin olive oil tasting, accompanied by an explanation of the product's aromas and quality characteristics.
Merenda nell'Oliveta in Castelluccio Valmaggiore is designed for both adults and children, featuring the active participation of municipal institutions and local schools, with students from the "Virgilio-Salandra" Comprehensive Institute working alongside producers and industry experts. It is an opportunity to rediscover the deep bond between the Monti Dauni village and its olive-growing tradition, set against a stunning landscape in the most authentic part of Puglia.
Perched among the Subappennino Dauno hills, the Municipality of Castelluccio Valmaggiore preserves historic olive groves and a rural heritage that this event helps to promote. By joining the Oil Cities network, the village highlights extra virgin olive oil as a core element of its identity, culture, and hospitality, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into one of the most suggestive and lesser-known areas of the Foggia province.
On May 23, 2026, Castelluccio Valmaggiore hosted the sixth edition of Merenda nell'Oliveta, promoted by the National Association of Oil Cities with the theme "The Oil of the Republic", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic. For one day, the L'Erario family estate turned into a place of meeting and sharing centered on the values of extra virgin olive oil and rural culture.
During the morning, participants took part in a walk to the olive grove, a guided tour on the evolution of cultivation techniques, and an extra virgin olive oil tasting with explanations of the aromas and quality characteristics. Attendees included Mayor Pasquale Marchese, Deputy Mayor Michele Giannetta, City Council President Pasquale Festa, and Councilor Osvaldo Di Letizia, alongside students from class 3G of the "Virgilio-Salandra" Comprehensive Institute. The technical aspects were led by expert Giuseppe Campanaro, director of Confagricoltura Foggia, and producer Angelo Pompa.
Castelluccio Valmaggiore is located in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the SS17 and the provincial roads of the Subappennino Dauno; the most convenient train station is Foggia, from which you can continue by car or local bus services.
The event takes place outdoors among the olive groves of the L'Erario family estate: comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for country walks are recommended.
