Two days in the Middle Ages through the streets of the Apennine village of Bologna
For two evenings in August, the historic center of Castel di Casio, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bologna nestled in the Upper Reno Apennines, transforms into a scene from another era. The Medieval Re-enactment fills the alleys and the evocative Piazzetta della Torre with ladies, knights, jesters, fire-eaters, acrobats, and costumed figures: witches, prostitutes, lepers, washerwomen, and alchemists populate the village, returning visitors to the atmosphere of a 13th-century village.
The event was born from the idea of a local figure, Carlo Cosimi, who created a theatrical performance with the town's young people, inspired by the medieval remains of the area. Over the years, the initiative has grown to become one of the most important summer events in the Bolognese Apennines, organized by the Pro Loco of Castel di Casio with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of numerous local associations, as part of the cultural project "The mountain before the year 1000".
The choice of the Middle Ages is not accidental: between the 13th and 14th centuries, Castel di Casio was the seat of the Capitanato della Montagna bolognese, a strategic point along the road connecting Bologna to Pistoia. Legal sessions were held here, bureaucratic matters were resolved, and an important monthly market took place. The re-enactment was created precisely to showcase this past, alternating shows and moments of historical-cultural approfondimento.
Admission is by free offering, and the event is designed for all ages, with free parking and shuttle service to the town center.
The 2026 edition of the Medieval Re-enactment of Castel di Casio is scheduled for Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22, 2026, starting from 6:00 PM, in the historic center of the Apennine village of Bologna.
As tradition dictates, the two days will feature a historical market, re-enactments of arts and crafts, live shows, a costume parade, music, and food stands. The date is confirmed by the official portal of the Bolognese Apennines (Metropolitan City of Bologna).
The detailed program (times, shows, and guests) will be published by the Pro Loco of Castel di Casio in the weeks leading up to the event: it is advisable to consult the official channels for updates.
