About Medieval Re-enactment

Every summer, the village of Castel di Casio, in the Bolognese Apennines, goes back eight centuries and transforms into a medieval village. For two evenings, ladies, knights, jesters, fire-eaters, flag-wavers, and falconers bring the alleys and squares to life, while historical encampments, duels, ancient crafts, and inns with typical dishes recreate the era when the town was the seat of the Capitanato della Montagna bolognese. A free and evocative event, one of the most beloved of the Upper Reno summer.

The village that returns to the Middle Ages

For two evenings in August, the historic center of Castel di Casio, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bologna nestled in the Upper Reno Apennines, transforms into a scene from another era. The Medieval Re-enactment fills the alleys and the evocative Piazzetta della Torre with ladies, knights, jesters, fire-eaters, acrobats, and costumed figures: witches, prostitutes, lepers, washerwomen, and alchemists populate the village, returning visitors to the atmosphere of a 13th-century village.

A history that starts from the town

The event was born from the idea of a local figure, Carlo Cosimi, who created a theatrical performance with the town's young people, inspired by the medieval remains of the area. Over the years, the initiative has grown to become one of the most important summer events in the Bolognese Apennines, organized by the Pro Loco of Castel di Casio with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of numerous local associations, as part of the cultural project "The mountain before the year 1000".

Why here

The choice of the Middle Ages is not accidental: between the 13th and 14th centuries, Castel di Casio was the seat of the Capitanato della Montagna bolognese, a strategic point along the road connecting Bologna to Pistoia. Legal sessions were held here, bureaucratic matters were resolved, and an important monthly market took place. The re-enactment was created precisely to showcase this past, alternating shows and moments of historical-cultural approfondimento.

What to see

  • Live shows: flag-wavers, warrior duels, falconers, fire artists, jugglers, and jesters
  • Historical pageant with drummers and clarion players mid-evening
  • Ancient crafts recreated along the village alleys
  • Encampments, both civilian and military
  • Themed market with crafts and traditional products
  • Inns with typical Apennine dishes
  • Workshops, old-fashioned games, and stories for children

Admission is by free offering, and the event is designed for all ages, with free parking and shuttle service to the town center.
