The medieval re-enactment of the Aluntino village, featuring historical pageants, flag-wavers, and falconers
The Medieval Historical Day is the grand historical re-enactment of San Marco d'Alunzio, an ancient village perched on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, traditionally on June 2nd, the entire historic center transforms into an open-air stage that takes visitors back a thousand years to rediscover the customs, costumes, and traditions of medieval society.
The heart of the event is the historical pageant of San Marco d'Alunzio, which commemorates the noble Counts Filangeri family and the era when the village was the capital of the County. Along the ancient cobbled streets of the center, performers in rich and lavish costumes, ladies and knights, parade accompanied by delegations of historical pageants from all over Sicily. The procession reaches Piazza del Castello, the highest point of the town, where the seal of the pact of friendship between the districts is renewed.
Throughout the day, the characteristic alleys of the village come alive with a crowd of street performers:
The re-enactment is also the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Nebrodi, famous for its red Aluntino marble, numerous churches, and the panorama that sweeps across the Aeolian Islands. The event, with free admission, is organized by the Municipality of San Marco d'Alunzio and attracts thousands of visitors from all over Sicily every year.
The 2026 Medieval Historical Day was held on June 2, 2026, in the historic center of San Marco d'Alunzio, with a program extending from morning until late evening (approximate hours 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM). The Nebrodi village renewed the grand historical pageant commemorating the Counts Filangeri family, with ladies, knights, and costumed performers joined by historical delegations from across Sicily.
Throughout the streets of the center, there were medieval markets, demonstrations of ancient crafts, live blacksmithing, performances by flag-wavers, musicians, jugglers, and fire-eaters, exhibitions of birds of prey and reptiles, and medieval games. The event remained free of charge.
San Marco d'Alunzio is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway exit at Sant'Agata di Militello, then follow the provincial road inland (about 15 minutes). The nearest train station is Sant'Agata di Militello on the Tyrrhenian line.
The event traditionally takes place on June 2nd, from morning until late evening. Admission is free.
The historic center is paved with stone and hilly: comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking is available on the outskirts of the village. It is recommended to take advantage of the day to visit the town's churches and monuments.
